I've been looking for a place to hog hunt here in state.

Has anyone hunted at Willis River?  If so, what was the experience like?
Does anyone know anything about this place?
Can we use ARs there?
Are there any other similiar preserves within three hours of the Tidewater Area? (In Virginia or NC)

It's a couple hundred dollars more than hunting spots down south, but being a few hours away is a lot more convienent.

Yeah, I know.  I was hoping someone could recommend cheaper place within driving distance.  In Florida, the hunts run around $250, but I'm from NW FLA and most of the hog hunting places are towards central/south fla.  Considering traveling and lodging fees, believe it or not $450 is beginning to sound reasonable to me.

That's a pretty reasonable fee.  You can find places in Florida, Georgia, and Texas where it is cheaper, but they also tend to lean on wild pigs as their quarry, which aren't the quality of the Russians that the preserves usually have.  Plus you're paying for the guide, facility, etc., etc.

I got a beauty of a hog at White Oak Preserve in Ohio paid a little more than what these guys are listing.  This one is worth a closer look, I didn't realize anyone in VA had hog hunts available.

Yeah KeenEdge and I looked around pretty hard for a cheap place for a while but could never find one.

You could also apply for the hog hunting lottery at False Cape State Park. My best friend went last year and killed two hogs. These are not big russian's but they are wild and you go in yourself with no guide. Lotta pride in bagging one of those little tasty pigs. We're going to apply, it's a lottery (although you can show up the day of early and if someone is a no show it's first come for the open slots) and applications are due by August 31st. There are a bunch of other hunts on there also. Be forwarned, False Cape is very very snaky and the hog trails are narrow and deep or at least the area they hunted was. Some other guys I know have been to South Carolina near Myrtle Beach hunting hogs twice this year and they had good luck. These are also wild hogs.

Looks like an excuse was found to shut them down forcefully, rather than handle it the way they would if it were, say, some infected cattle or hogs on a farm.  If the state wanted him to close the preserve, a demand letter, or even chains on the gate with the police to enforce a shutdown could have been done.  Talk about doing everything the worst possible way...

This pisses me off, did some more searching:
