"Got my Safe Shooters Certificate assessment this weekend"

Err, wass that then? Do I need one before I can play with CSR Practical/mini rifle etc? If so how do I go about getting it?

Sorry for all the questions, I guess I'm just too new to all of this.

Needed when you shoot on a military range (Bisley is classed as a military range) - proves you're safe and know what you're doing

Available from your local club secretary if you've shot fullbore with them.

Ah, thanks for that. I've only shot .22 rim fire at my local club so far. Still waiting to get my hands on something bigger

If it helps, the actual safe certification course through the NRA at Bisley only differed from regular safety rules slightly. The part that struck me as different was that the rifle must be on target before fitting a magazine, and/or letting the working parts forward.

Obviously you want to keep a firearm pointed in a safe direction for this, such as downrange, but they were quite insistent it be on target, not just pointed down range. Other than that it is easy and it hasn't stopped the unsafe shooters, so it's probably pointless too!

Have fun!

Well I did a squib round drill and handed in my multi-choice test paper, so as far as I am aware I should get my card at the next shoot in January. My club doesn't have permission for scoped rifles (only iron sights), so I will have to do that part separately with someone else, but I've been give the number for a guy who can help me.

So fingers crossed by February/March I should be ready to go, then I can show you guys what a shit shot I am.

Must be becoming stricter. They didn't have any test papers when I did it, although they did have dud-round procedures which were also amusing; how does one notify a range officer when 90% of the time there isn't one when shooting without a club? I wonder if they would send someone down with a hammer for me when the Mini-14 action chokes on RG? That would be handy!

They rented me pretty much every firearm available without checking what I was certified to which was solely scoped rifle. I wonder if the original requirement for these safety courses included a pass for individual types of firearm?

Give it five years and people will need actual training to pass these courses; it seems the natural progression of these things.

How does that work then?.. The only way to be sure it is on target is to be looking through the sights, and only the shooter can be sure of that

I'm pleased you are getting your card.
I don't see why your club should really differentiate between scoped & unscoped long arms.
I guess it's just another procedure based around a collimator / bore sighter ?
But basic principles for longer range open sight & scope use remain the same regarding initial zeroing ?
Saying that, I'm still waiting to get "Catapault" & "Pea shooter" signed off

I have a view about competency card & certs in general.
If you need to complete a course to do a particular shooting discipline then great, they show that you have done
some basic supervised shooting, but much like a driving test pass, that does not guarantee competency !
Theres increasing onus ( reliance) on these certificates & it's mostly to do with insurance & liability in this nanny state
we live in.

Personally, I can tell if someones safe usually before a shot has been fired.
And it does not have to involve someone bellowing the following....
"Opening case"
"Removing xxxxx from case"
"Opening action"
"Closing action etc etc....."

My Tourettes gets worse when the above happens...& it does happen !
