So an old supply SGT of mine just moved to Ft. Hood. For Father's day, his kids (wife) got him his first AR15.

Do any of you gents have any suggestions of places in the area to shoot, train, shop, etc? Thanks all for any info you have. I will be cross posting this to the .mil forum as well.

Texas Star range Only went there a couple of times, one was for the CHL class.

There is the civilian range on post but too much hassle and paperwork so I never bothered with it.

Webers off I-35 headed north to Dallas.

To be honest, I fucking hated Fort Hood so I never spent any time around the area at all.

Copperas Cove Pistol Club, a second on Weber's, Astro Village (I think) off of 183 south of Copperas Cove on the way to Austin. FH Sportsman's Range is not too bad, but get a copy of FHR 190-11 Privately Owned Weapons. Bit of a hassle getting on-post "legally," but they do have rifle range out to 100 yds.

Hicksville is just outside north range in Gatesville. Old school rules with paper and steel pistol, 25 & 100 yard rifle. They have a bay with a 5 point spinning steel target that's fun to blast. Tannerite allowed but you have to tell them first.

Best of the West shooting range in Liberty Hill is a 45 mile drive.

Texas star shooting - Kempner
Astros shooting range - Florence

I shoot at both. Texas star is a "nicer" range.
Astros is a "bigger" range, but older and slightly run down.

If you come out toward Liberty Hill (south on 183) there is the Best of the West Shooting Range. It is west of Liberty Hill on State Hwy 29. They have tactical bays where you can move and shoot, pistol ranges and a rifle range that goes out to 1,000 yards. If you come out to best of the West be sure to stop by A Texas Girl's Guns, The Gun Shop in Liberty Hill, located at the intersection of State Hwy 29 and Ranch Road 1869.

if you go to Astros, Best of the West is only about 10 min away, better range.

A membership is cheaper, but not required. I think it's about 16/ 2 hrs, but I've been out there longer than that on the same price.

I don't think I've ever had any issues with them at all, yep, no problems. I usually just get a tacbay.

Went out today to BOTW. Very nice area, tactical bays are cool if you bring your own stuff. Had an hour wait for the bay's today. Not sure if it's worth the drive for me honestly. Texas star shooting in Kempner is slightly better. Just wish it were bigger.
