12276.1.  (a) Notwithstanding Section 12276, "assault weapon" shall
also mean any of the following:
  (1) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has the capacity to
accept a detachable magazine and any one of the following:
  (A) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action
of the weapon.
  (B) A thumbhole stock.
  (C) A folding or telescoping stock.
  (D) A grenade launcher or flare launcher.
  (E) A flash suppressor.
  (F) A forward pistol grip.

Is that as in Vertical Grip?  Is that because the grip will protrude conspicuously beneath the action???

DOJ regs define both a pistol grip AND a forward grip as a vertical grip intended to hold with the web of you hand.

What's the problem?
If you have a fixed-mag, then its not an AW and you can have a VFG.
If you have a registered AW, then you can have a VFG.

If you have a SAi M1A Socom II don't mount a forward grip on it.

ditto the keltec su16s too (with the compact foreend swapped in place of the bipod handguards).

su16 + VFG + removable mag = unregistered AW
