I haven't hunted deer in the area, but have hunted some private land just west of it off pine bluff road.  You shouldn't have a problem filling your tag in the area.  The deer are everywhere, and if you do your part, you will get a good sized one.

Not sure of where the check-in is, I'm sure someone will be along to let you know.  I do know that there is a Park office near the boat launch into heideke lake, at the end of goose lake road(I believe thats the road).  There is also a park office at Des Plaines conservation area located on north river road, north of the turn off for the kankakee river boat launch.
