This is all over the local news, with the .50 (an armalite I believe) and belted .50 ammo prominently displayed to the media....

From Syracuse.com

Huge Lenox bust nets guns and fireworks
State troopers arrested a Lenox couple today after finding $30,000 worth of illegal fireworks, including dynamite, several thousand dollars in cash, prescription drugs and up to $60,000 worth of guns at their house on Pine Ridge Road.

One of the 30 guns discovered in Francis and Robin Rancier's house is a 50-caliber sniper rifle, which can hit a target from three miles away, said state police investigator Pat DiPirro.

"He definitely was selling (fireworks) to acquaintences and throughout the state," DiPirro said.

Police descended on the house, 4016 Pine Ridge Road, after a three-month investigation. The couple faces felony weapons and fireworks possession charges. Because Francis Rancier has two DWI felonies on his record, he'll also face a separate weapons posession charge. Investigators expect to make more arrests.

The house is on a busy residential street, with the closest neighbor about 30 yards away. Authorities found a fuel tank on the property, making the potential for danger huge.

For the full story, see Aaron Gifford's report in Saturday's Post-Standard

What BS!  IIRC, the longest .50BMG kill was 1873 yards in Afghanistan by a Canadian sniper with a McMillan .50BMG.

It didn't say a man-size target.   In an article I read a while back, the author went out with some guys in the desert and hit a big-ass (13 feet wide) rock from 2 miles away.  The .50 in question was closer to an artillery piece than a real rifle though, with a big base to rest it on and lead screws to adjust elevation and windage.  They didn't hit it with the first round either.

Simply amazing the spin they put on these stories. What home in the NE DOESN"T have a method of storing fuels for heating their homes?

Complete bullshit.

you all missed the biggest point of that story.

while people were being robbed, raped, murdered, and tormented. the cops chose to spend 3 months of our tax money watching a gun collector sell family and friends fireworks for fun. the man prolly had some kinda heart prollem and had medication( perscrition drugs as the cops say). and the 50 was something he'd been waiting half his life to own, and he prolly never shot it.
so now they are arrested, and they pigs are just trying to figure out how much they can possably hit that guy with and the guy will be put in jail for 15-25 years for "weapon charges" while that fuggin POS that raped and killed a 13year old girl gets 6 month probation because he had the money for the "good" lawyer.

sorry..that was me just ranting

Two felony convictions proabably means the dude had many more DWI's that were allowed to be pleaded away. They dont give you the felony charge for DWI unless your a career alcoholic with zero chance of rehabilitation in NY.

The prescription dope was likely illegal too, because they cant charge you with that kind of violation if you have a written doctors prescription.  Fireworks, tschh, no biggie. This guy was basically a turd IMHO.

I think this akin to the guy they zapped earlier for shooting his gun collection in his bedroom, using his sheetrock closet as a backstop (in other words, noboby should be getting worked up about this, especially for a drunkard felon). The firearms wern't even the factor for the arrest here though anyway (the guns where probably all legal, its just him possesing them wasn't legal given the flony DWI's). Yes, the newspaper probably inflated the inflated report from the PD about the fireworks and guns, but would you like to live next to a hidden fireworks stockpile (even a small one)? Then again, the stockpile wuld never have happened if NY didn't have those stupid laws on fireworks, but thats another argument for elsewhere.

No, in NY your second DWI conviction is automatically a felony. Most are probably pleaded down to 1 yr probation. As for the rest the cops/prosecutors often add BS charges, its the way they get better sentencing when they get em on the real charges.
