.............got to shoot the job TRG 22 today. I must say, it is slick and nice to shoot. Accurate too so I suppose I should count myself lucky................free gun, scope and ammunition.....there is a new top shot on the section.........

Oh, and  I got a another one as well, Ruger M77 MkII. haven't seen this since my initial course but they shoot well, and I do like the .243 round.

....and I got to have a go with the section's new HK417, 16" barrel version, 4-rail fore-end and sporting a Leupold CQ/T. Well it is just for cattle..............

A friend of mine is in the same job, Icarus, up here, but in humberside. He shoots a trg at work, so shoots one for sport too. I was absolutely amazed at the lack of range time given to him.

A mate of mine has just done his "sniper" course with the Met. He is the first to admit it is not what a civillian would expect when he hears a police officer has been trained as a sniper.

Not a huge amount of range time. Overall a low round count. Has never shot from an elevated position ( and was really unaware of how moving away from horizontal shooting affects point of impact ) etc

Yep, very little range time. I would imagine 50 or so rounds, eight times a year is pretty average for Rifles...........not good.

I'm glad for my outside interest as it undoubtedley helps me at work. Those of you who have seen me shoot will know I am a pretty average club level shooter, but it's still way more than your average AFO/Rifle Officer does so it keeps me at/near the top of that particular tree. Of course, it's not all about shooting....................

Its political correctness gone mad. I feel like writing a letter to The Daily Mail.

You are lucky to have a job where you can indulge your hobby - means a lot to be doing something you enjoy. Well done.

I don't see my job as an opportunity to indulge my hobby. I would have the hobby regardless of my job. Rather my hobby enhances my work role.

Which came first for you - Were you a shooter before you became an AFO or did you get into shooting afterwards ?

I was a shooter first. When I started I got the usual 'gun nut' treatment. Still do, unless it suits them to actually have someone who knows enough to be dangerous. Ironically they now want me to take on a much more involved role but I'm thinking it's too late.... only four years to retirement

No. It was closed earlier this year to make space for offices and locker rooms. None of our stations have canteen facilities anymore................oh except for our Force Headquarters, of course. They have a nice airy concourse called 'The Street', where there are nice comfy chairs, a small shop, newspapers, snacks etc., and a Costa coffee bar and restaurant where the office workers can relax in their breaks. Even us ordinary Police are allowed in, as long as we take off our scary tac vests, body armour etc, because it intimidates the HQ workers and they don't like it..........we don't use it much. All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others.........................
