Basic Tactical Pistol

Introductory Level - 3 Days

June 5 - 7, 2004
Saturday, Sunday and Monday

Where: Greater Pittsburgh Gun Club
25 minutes Southwest of Pittsburgh

This course is designed for people who have not previously taken formal instruction on the deployment of handguns for personal defense, as well as those who want to "brush up". It affords 23 hours of instruction over three days and one evening. It will be held at the Greater Pittsburgh Gun Club, 25 min. southwest of Pittsburgh. Topics to be covered include:
Gun Handling and Presentation. Weapons checks; proper presentation from holsters; "eyes off" manipulation and handling of pistols, including clearance of jams and stoppages; correct stance; sight picture and marksmanship techniques appropriate to defensive (as opposed to sport or target) shooting.

Basic firing positions. Including introduction to tactical employment of them.

Mind Set and the psychology of armed combat.

Characteristics, tactical advantages and limitations of pistol ammunition. Includes research data on external ballistics and wound ballistics, a review of currently available ammunition and comparison of handgun cartridges to rifle and shotgun ammunition.

Introduction to low-light techniques. One night session is part of the course.

A review of current Pennsylvania law on the use of deadly force and concealed carry (by an attorney).

Cost: $325.00 (members of the host facility receive a $25.00 discount). Includes instruction, range fees, targets, range supplies and written materials. Students to provide their own ammunition, personal gear and meals. There is a snack bar at the range.

Course format: Lectures (approximately 5 hrs.), and live-fire exercises (approximately 18 hrs.). Each student will need a minimum of 600 rounds of ammunition. Certificate of completion for those who pass.

Instructor: The Instructor will be Giles Stock. Mr. Stock served with the Phoenix, Arizona Police Dept. for 18 years, during which time he was the training supervisor for their SWAT unit. He has instructed at the Gunsite Training Center since 1981, where he is certified as a Rangemaster for pistol, carbine, shotgun and submachine gun. Mr. Stock was at one time responsible for certification of all public firing ranges in Phoenix (under police auspices). Giles Stock is a 3-time winner of the "Police Olympics" in revolver. Now retired from the police department, he works full-time as a trainer and consultant to companies such as Hornady, Steyr and GSI. Range assistance will be provided by NRA certified instructors.

Class size: Enrollment will be limited to TWELVE students.

Prerequisites: None. It is, however, expected that students will have a basic familiarity with pistols.
