So, got a call from the FEO. (Is it FLO, or FEO?)

He is coming around on Thursday afternoon to have a look and chat about my application/safes etc.
What can I expect? Shall I have any answer ready to questions that I may not expect to be asked etc? I don't have an alarm system in the house, but I heard it's not always neccesary, unless you start getting into the 9+ guns area.

Depends on local crime levels,  your houses location and the nature of the house. With my FEO (Hants), 6 guns in a terraced or semi = no alarm. More than 4 in a detached bungalow (me) = alarm.

Don't worry, It's not like a job interview or any other such nonsense, Just be yourself, When my FEO comes round we spend most of our time talking about fishing or bikes. They are just assesing your character so be cool!

My visit was painless to be honest, although I did instruct the missus not to make any funny comments in his presence ! She made us both a cuppa and went shopping after 15mins or so anyway, but he did ask her if she was alright with having firearms in the house !?!

FEO checked my safes, and even twiddled each bolt to make sure it was tight.
A guy in my club had his FEO literally try and pull his cabinet off the wall !

All in all he was in my house for 2 hours, but to be honest, I couldnt get  a word in, so I just sat there and listened to what he had to say.

He asked me about the club I was in etc, what sort of shooting they did etc, and went through my wishlist of firearms that I'd applied for. I got everything without any issues.

I asked him about transportation of guns/ammo in cars etc, just to make out that I was concerned about safety/security etc

Relax, be yourself, it wasnt like an interrogation or anything, it should be a formality if your application has got this far ?

Good luck !

Cheers

Make sure you ain't been done for something naughty?… speeding in a 30 zone could be interpreted as showing poor judgement/irresponsible attitude.

I had a court appearance for speeding....no biggy....as long as you hide nothing...nothing to worry about.

I have heard that a Drink driving offence will do you more harm....under the poor judgement as Andy mentioned.

There has already been a PNC and DVLA check on you before the FLO/FEO visits.

During my renewal visit (June), the FEO already had the print outs, I've been a good boy, so have a clean(ish) record. FEO also had my wife's records???

Speeding or other minor traffic offences are often not reported on the application forms especially if the three year endorsement has passed. Failure to mention it gets a warning and depending on how much of an ass the FEO is, can be 'official', and it should be mentioned to the licencing dept as soon as it happens.

One-offs are not so bad, it's the repeated offences, however minor, that show a poor judgment or even a disregard for the law. Then you'll have problems with the FAC process.

The PNC check for my RFD didn't show up my SP30 offence, and that was 2+ years 'on the books'. Perhaps there are levels of PNC check, or they only look at the firearms database and find what you tell them or what gets reported to them directly.

Just finished my meeting with the FEO. It took about an hour, and went really well. The guy was really knowledgable, courteous and friendly. He took a good look at the security, safes etc. There was a hiccup when it came to the Section 1 Shotgun–not in terms of having good reason or not, but he was unsure about the ammunition purchasing requirements for it –he thought I would need a SCG or section 2 to buy ammo for the sec 1

Didn't make sense of course so he consulted a book and then proceeded to make a few phone calls to senior people and dealers, and sorted out the matter. He had no issue with me asking for a sec 1 shotgun or any of the other calibers (or ammo amounts I asked for).

I'll basically now wait and either get a call or simply get the certificate through the mail.

Good news Johan, sounds like it all went well.

I'd never thought  of the issue of purchasing shotgun ammo (non-slug) if you didnt have a Shotgun Certificate ?

It looks like you could'nt buy any shotgun ammo without at least a SCG, or Sec 1 Shotgun on your FAC. Sec 1 shotgun on FAC gives you access to slugs + unlimited normal shotgun ammmo. (i think this is how it pans out).

Well, I'm a member of Marylebone R&PC, which has affiliation to bisley, so we can shoot solid slug and practical shotgun over there....and I regularly shoot practical shotgun (once a month) at Cheshunt Rifle and Pistol club. (I'm still a probationer there).

That is good reason enough, but I'm not counting my chickens yet...as the FEO or his overlords may decide that they don't want to give me access to any/specific firearms.

I'll just have to wait and see. PSG is very fun and tacticool, so I'd really enjoy having my own gun for that discipline.

There's only one for me really...

Benelli M1 Super 90, or M3. Guy at the club has one, and they are amazing in the build quality and simplicity. They need very little cleaning due to the recoil system (mechanical, not gas - the M3 is gas operated but much more expensive ETA: M3 uses same recoil system as M1, but the M3 can be switched between Pump and semi auto - handy for weaker ammo etc..).

There's a reason why the marines use M1's out in the sandbox - they're very simple. robust and reliable.

If you can get them over there the FN Police Standard Models (basically a Winchester 1300) are excellent guns.  They use an aluminum receiver so the weight is good and for a pump they are very fast.  Nice action and they use tactical chokes so you can extend the range on them a bit.  In the States they sell for right around $350 usually.

Having said that, I agree with that previous poster that in the semi auto world, the M1 Super 90 is the shit.  Couple of friends have Montefeltros (sp?) which is more like the sporting model (wood stock, smaller tube) and they are excellent guns all the way around.  The recoil operated system they use really is sweet.

I'm still baffled by the inane rules on shotgun barrel lengths that defy any logic or common sense!

…Deep in some dusty corner of the Home Office…

M'lud!  The villains are sawing off the barrels of their double barrel shotguns to make them easier to carry!

Okie Dokie! We'll make the minumum barrel length 24" and the overall 40"!

M'Lud! Someone went nuts with an AK47!

Okie Dokie! We'll put all hi cap pump and semi auto shotguns under Section 1!

M'lud! One of the pheasants wants to know does that mean he cut down the barrel of his Section 1 shotgun to 12" like for a Section 1 rifle?

No! But if he has a double barrel shotgun he can put it under Section 1 and cut it down as short as he likes!

M'Lud! But wasn't the whole idea of the 1968 act to stop people having sawn off shotguns?

Ah, British Firearms Law! You really couldn't make it up…

Just to keep you straight the Marines use the new M4, which is gas piston operated.

There have been reported problems with the earlier recoil only operated models, mostly on lighter shot loads.

Can you increase the barrel length with a permanently fixed muzzlebreak/flash hider before importing to the UK as Sec 1?
