I have been wanting an e-reader for me & one as a gift for my Dad.
I had a chance to get a Kindle in my hand this past weekend at Staples.  I was pretty impressed by the size, weight & the E-Ink display.  At the time I was sold on it until my dear sweet wife said she had enough AmEx points to get a Nook at zero cost.
After at bit of geeking the Nook looks like it will work like I want...so which one??
Features I want;
able to read .pdf files- I have Unintended Consequences & Lights out on pdf so those & other work related pdf's would be nice to have access to.
book marking,
small size but big screen yeah I want both, I've read some on my Itouch & the screen size is a PIA w/ all the scrolling around just to read a page,
able to read various news sources, newspapers, magazines, writers etc...,
long battery life,
easy to navigate,
free books,
lending or loaning of titles,
cheap prices on older titles,
deals on new releases,
anything I missed?

So does anybody have either or lived with one for any length of time?
I know we have a book forum but I wanted to quiz our own HTF first.

I have the Kindle software on my android phone. Works great.

I was reading an article the other day that indicated that nook didn't have as many books available as the Kindle did.

YMMV.

I dont have one yet, but i really liked how easy on the eyes the Nook screen was.  It wasn't a back lit LCD and it seemed very natural.  I wish the main portion of the screen was touch sensitive (and the new ones may be) but i guess that was the price for having it look the way it did.  I felt like i could read it for as long as i wanted without having "fatigue" that comes from staring at a back lit screen.

Do you remember the article?
This could be a tipping point for my Pop.  He'll read 4+ books a month.

Kindle books on Amazon.com : "over 750,000; over 1.8 million free, out-of-copyright, pre-1923" http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002Y27P3M/ref=kindlesu-1
Nook books on Barnes and Noble : "more than 2 million" http://www.barnesandnoble.com/nook/index.asp

Either way, book availability shouldn't be a problem.

I use a Kindle. I didn't spring for the 3g and haven't missed it. It is very nice and easy on the eyes. I put work .pdf's on it and use when I have presentations etc. Battery life is very good. You may want to consider getting a cover for it. Nice stocking stuffer. I haven't had any issues finding books or periodicals with Amazon. I also like I can use the content on my Kindle, PC's, Adroid etc. You own the content and how you view it is your business. Very good for travel and sitting in boring airports (can also play media like mp3 etc.). Good luck.
ps....try Project Gutenberg for free content..anything out of copyright is there:

It was announced today that the Nook will be getting a new Android operating system in January that will increase battery life, allow pinch to zoom, and allow use of apps from the Android marketplace. That means it will be a reader with full Android tablet capability. With color.

For $250, this is a no brainer.

It would be cool but I look at LCD displays all day & like the e-ink screens for that reason.

If you think LCD is bad, back in the old days we had these things called "CRT monitors".

I like the Kindle/Nook B&W screens, they are very comfortable to read. I got my wife a Kindle for x-mas. The book availability seemed much higher.

Since the Nook is Android based, there is a free Kindle app. Best of both worlds.

if you decide to get a kindle you can probably get a target or amazon gift card

I've found it's generally better to get gift cards to buy merchandise with points instead of using points directly

Amex seems to charge a premium for that

I just got the nook color.  I am posting from it using wifi here at the house.  I love this thing.  I wanted it as a less expensive version of the ipad. I am wating for the os system update to come in jan.  I am not too much of a reader, but I downloaded a couple of books and this thing kicks butt.  I would recommend this to others, based on the fact that it has the ability to expand with soon to be released apps.

Edit also no monthly fee like ipad

The Nook is more open about what formats you can read on it, the Kindle can't handle the popular epub format, you'd have to convert anything you get in epub format to another format for reading on the Kindle.

I have a Kindle and I really like reading on it.  I have no experience with the Nook, but remember that there are TWO different Nooks, the Android based one with the LCD screen and short battery life, and the E-Ink one with longer battery life.

Also, don't expect to pay less than paperback book prices for any book that is still copyrighted (aside from the occasional sale).

Here is one awful example of digital book prices.Atlas Shrugged

Mass Marked Paperback: $9.99
Regular Paperback:  $13.90
Kindle:  $18.99
Hard Cover:  $23.89

I bought my wife a Kindle last year for Christmas and she loves it. There are a lot of free books available. Many "classics" are very cheap. You can buy factory refurbished Kindles too for even greater saving. That said, I ordered my wife an iPad for this Christmas.

If you like sci fi/fantasy, Baen has some free books on their site (multiple file formats).  Link  I have an older Dell pda that I've used for reading ebooks for a number of years now.  Nice being able to pack hundreds of books in a pocket.

I looked at the B&N color Nook last night and I'm strongly leaning this way for me & maybe the basic Nook for Pop.
I'll have some time to get what I want.  I like the fact the color Nook is Android based & will become more 'open' in Jan.  Also since I'm in the picture biz a color screen will be nice.  That way I can bore friends & customers w/ a 'slide show'.  Only if it came with the 'click-click' sound when changing from one 'slide' to the next.

the indecision continues...

Baen also publishes their titles for $4-6 each or $15 for all books released in a given month.  Some books are released in a partially edited edition, which may not match the final edition, months in advance of scheduled publication for more.  They also don't have any forms of digital rights management on what they sell, so you can easily keep backup copies of what you've purchased without any special software or concerns that authentication servers might not be around in the future.

ETA:  Toni Weisskopf, the publisher at Baen, lives in Georgia, has a range in her backyard, and carries :-)

Hands down, go with the Kindle. I bought one for my wife lat Christmas and she loves it. I bought one for myself about 2 months ago and love it. I researched the hell out of the e-books before I bought one and everything pointed me to the Kindle. It may cost a little more than some of them but from all the reviews and comparisons I found pointed to the Kindle as the best out there.
