check this stuff out it's a baked on finish. They do it out here at advanced coatings in the valley in all different colors.

One of the primary advantages of Duracoat is that it does not require heat to cure so you can coat all sorts of gear that you wouldn't want to bake in an oven.

ETA:  Heat will speed it up, Duracoat also makes a high temperature curing finish, and when using Duracoat it always seems to take a lot more of it than they say it should.  Parkerizing makes for a nice undercoat.

What colours do you need? I am about to make an order and If I do not have what you need here, I can piggyback yours on my order (we generally pay $100 and up in hazmat shipping fees on each order, so we let people piggyback on our orders so they can avoid paying the hazmat fees that we are already paying anyway).

Also, I am happy to give you any advice you may need, and I have a blast cabinet set up with aluminum oxide if you need to use it.

Let me know how I can help.

Anyone planning on doing a Duracoat project in a Flat Coyote Tan or Brown color and if so I have two carabiners I would like to get sprayed if you are willing to do so. I will give you some cash for time and material.

Send me a email.

Anchorage/Valley area.

Thanks

I would love to order some paint!!!!!  I have been having it barged up solo and would love to start chipping in with a group order.  What all can you order?  Cerakote?  Duracoat?  Gunkote?

I had a number of firearms a while back that had some work done and needed refinishing.  I am a big fan of doing things myself and set up with a compressor / blast cabinet / sprayer / oven in my garage.  It is a blast but my god it is a lot of work.  Getting a piece prepped properly for paint takes forever.  I need a chemical bath setup.  I had been using gunkote but really want to try Cerakote.  If I can't get that I was thinking about switching to high temp duracoat.

Also, to the gentleman asking for someone to refinish his gun for cash for time / supplies.  As I understand it (could be wrong), I am not legally allowed to refinish someones firearm for money.  That would require me to have an FFL.  What I read said that because you will be taking someones gun into inventory, gunsmithing (wording used, but they mean breaking it down), refinishing and exchanging the service for money.

Hey AKFF, if you addressing this to me. What I'm trying to get sprayed are two climbing carabiners and not a weapon. My thought is: If someone is already planning on doing a project and has any duracoat left over while there system is already set up. I would like them to hint my two rock climbing carabiners and I am willing to get them some cash for there trouble.

With the wear and tear on carabiners, and you are going Duracoat, I would use their harder bake on product Durabake.

(Facepalm)  I don't know how I missed that....
I have to get my compressor back up and running, but if I gear up to do some coating I would do the biners no problem.  No cash needed.

I am a climber and was curious why you would want your biners coated?  They are anodized if I'm not mistaken?

We will help any of you with the Duracoat orders - just let me know what you need and we will add it to our orders. We are also glad to offer advice on the coating process, especially the prep, which is crucial. I can order Cerakote and Gunkote as well, but I do not use it as it requires an oven, and I cannot afford the right kind of oven right now. You can do it in the wrong kind of oven and it will work fine usually, but I won't do anything on other people's weapons that is not done totally right. As far as durability, the three are going to be more or less equal for most people's purposes, with each having certain small advantages over the other two.

I am happy to do the carabiners for you, AlaskaM4, but the finish will probably wear pretty quickly (no matter what finish is used) if they are used hard. I can throw them in when I am already doing those colours.

As far as having someone Duracoat weapons, it is true that the need to have an FFL. However, be careful about who you give it to. We do very little work for AK residents because there have been people here in the past that have done such horrific work that people here don't trust anyone any more. Few professionals do good work, and the majority of the really nice finishes we see are done by individuals on their own weapons. Many "professionals" are just gunsmiths or gunstore owners who see a way to make a quick buck on the side, with no real experience or skill. We really recommend people try it themselves - it's fun and it is pretty easy to get it to turn out well.

Anyway, we created a monster with the Alien Skin Digital, and orders are flooding in, so I have to order more finish soon. Let me know what you guys need and I'll throw it in with the order.

Thanks all for the good advice and additional information. I do not know jack in the painting/finishing department. I have a hard time keeping spray paint from running!

AK_Mike, thanks for the Durabake idea looks like a good product for this application.

AKFF, thanks for the offer. Glad to hear from other that enjoy swinging from ropes. The reason I want them coated is because I want to have some a spares left on my plate carrier and have them non reflective and do not want them to stand out. I have seen non reflective black/ non reflective ones online, but black stand out like a sore thumb on multicam. I do believe they are anodized but like I say before  I do not know jack in the painting/finishing department so I do not know if this idea of mine will even work.

762Precision, I think I will take you up on your offer. Let me know when I can bring them over to you. I know there is no guarantee that this will hold on these carabiners but I'm willing give it a try. Thank you.

I have some templates for multicam that I got from a guy in the refinishing forum here.  It's a sheet that you print out and either stencil through or tape the shapes on.    I think they are .doc or .pdf so I can send them if you pm me your email address.

If you are using these biners on something that doesn't have a ton of metal on metal contact then the coating should last a good while.  It's just like any gun finish no matter how hardcore, if you rub metal on metal enough it will come off.

I will touch base with you on PM about ordering paint through you.  I really appreciate the opportunity to save a bit on shipping.

I have seen what you are talking about with the gunshops doing some pretty crappy finishes in the name of making a few bucks.  Including one whose name is mud here.  I am a perfectionist and I am very thorough in my process.  Since they are my guns I have a tonf of time and I take as much as I need.  I've been known to hit up my brother for advice as he has been a car painter for few decades.

I had the opportunity to check out a custom 870 that you guys refinished and it was top notch work.  I was very impressed as it was even better than the type of finish that I had previously aspired to.  It seemed much more durable than what I have been able to accomplish.

It's been a few years but i think i have seen some of the ones you are talking about and they do look like shit. Unless you like the rattle can by Helen Keller look.

I'm set for templates for a while. I splurged and got a 35" vinyl cutter a few years ago to keep me busy.
