I was observing a CPL course the other night and the LEO doing the legal briefing alluded to a safe storage law in Michigan. He couldn't remember where in the MCL he'd seen it.

I've searched findlaw, packing.org and every other legal resource I know of. I can't find it either.

Can anyone here provide an authoratative answer?

Every time I buy a gun, I get a gun lock and a little pamphlet that talks about how the owner is responsible for safely securing his firearms and that said owner can be held liable (civil/criminal/both?) if someone under 18 were to gain access to them.  I have never read them very well and can't say if they cite any specific laws, so I can't give you all the particulars, but it may be a place to start your research.  Hope that helps.  If not, sorry.

Just wondered: If this was where you where at.  Some of the LEOs that have talked at the classes we have given seem to think that you cannot leave your firearm in a locked car (secured) for any reason.

The people that I talked with in Lansing told me that even unlicensed persons can transport firearms this way Locked and unloaded in box or trunk so they said that someone with CCW sure could?

Hey R_F. The LEO I've been working with isn't Dave.

Based on what ScoutMaster posted it looks like MI doesn't have a safe storage law.

I'm sure that wouldn't stop Feiger from coming after me if some misguided youth broke into my vehicle, stole my sidearm, and used it in the commission of a crime.

It's a shame .gov forces the good guys to place themselves in legal and physical jeopardy when they go to those nine magical places where only criminals are allowed to carry.

Oh well, that's life in a budding socialist dystopia. Thanks for the replies all.
