They work just fine. Just stick to Eastern Block metal mags or Bulgarian Circle 10's and you'll be good to go.

+1 for the bulgarian circle 10's.  I've been running then for a few years with zero problems.

From what I hear, the 40 rnd mags from Korea aren't that reliable.  Some say they are junk.  Try to find some 75rnd drums, mine all work great.

As others have said, European, and Chinese 40 rounders work quite well.  Going prone with them sucks, as does using them in conjunction with a bipod.  

They were made for the RPKs as an option to the drum.  Even with the RPKs high bipod they aren't exactly convenient, as they can restrict your ability to gain elevation from the bipod, while they bottom out.  30 rounders are just a bit handier, and fit in a vest or chest pouch, more easily.

yes.  go big or go home.  much more capacity for the form factor versus a 40rd mag.

load a drum and wind it up now or later.

Which cali.? I run 7.62 waffles and 5.45 Bulgies and not one problem.
