So my secluded suburban neighborhood has been the target of scumbags breaking in to cars left in driveways.  First occurance about 2 months ago––they broke windows of cars around 5 am on a Sunday morning.  They got lots of good loot.  About two weeks ago, we had another wave.  This tiime, they did not break windows––they did not have to.  They hit about 5 cars, all with the doors unlocked.  An email went out about it both times, but some people don't learn and one person got robbed twice.

Called local PD about increasing patrols at this time.  But that is no fun.  Was talking with a buddy about rigging something up in my old truck.  Thiefs may have entered my truck but there is nothing of value and so messy, I would never know.  After many good ideas as well as concern about injuring someone, we came up with this:  Thunder B.  It is a simulated flashbang for airsoft (with only a bang) that uses CO2 to overpressurize the plastic hull.  IT pops and makes a loud noise.  Based on Youtube videos, people have exploded them almost touching their skin with no injury.

I would arm one of these and place it under the drivers seat (careful to make sure the spoon will still have room to release the firing mechanism) then wire it to the drivers door.  Open door, 4 seconds later, BOOM and hopefully badguy pees his pants.  I do not think this thing is loud enough to wake me up so I will put a baby monitor on front porch with reciever next to me and my flashlight and cell phone

Anybody have any experience with these?  What are your thoughts?  I have read all the cases about booby traps and civil suits.  This is not a lethal device but I do realize I am taking on some liability and I also realize they will know where I live.

Also, anybody have a game camera I could borrow?  Without pics, it didn't happen  If someone in the metro atlanta area has one, I would of course agree to pay or replace the trail cam should anything happen to it.

Thanks!

I like it, but you are setting yourself up for liability. If I were to do it I would rig it in such a way that it couldnt be proven that I was the one that set it up. I would want it to look like the Ute had it on him and it accidentally went off. This also means if you are going to film it, MAKE SURE NO ONE SEES THE VIDEO.

Here is what I did when I lived in Philadelphia (major shit hole).   I had small LED lights installed on each door of my car right on the ledge just below the window.  That way you can see a small red LED flashing through the windows.  That is an excellent visual deterent.    The second thing I did was put two electric sirens under the driver and passenger side car seats that were over 140 decibels each and wired them into the alarm system.

That way, it is physically impossible to be in the car stealing stuff without holding your ears with both hands.  It causes physical pain.

Other than that, I never left anything in plain view so there was little reason for crooks to want to choose my car over someon elses.   In Philadelphia, crackheads would bust out your window for something as small as 40 cents in change sitting in your ashtray if they could see it.
