I have a Daniel defense m4v4 and want to switch the 9 inch rail it comes with, to a troy alpha rail or something similar.  My questions are do I need to buy a new barrel nut ?  Do I need a specific tool?  can this be done by a novice or should I have a smith in the St. Louis area do it?
Thanks

it looks like that is a lite rail from the pictures.  if that is true you wil need a lite rail tool to remove, a standard ar barrel nut, and a standard ar barrel wrench. it isn't hard to do and a lot of people have the DD wrenches.  i would offer to help but am in KC

btw, if that is a lite rail you know that the alpha rail or such will weight more than the lite rail right?  you can probably sell it as LNIB if it is unscrached for what you are going to pay for the alpha rail also.

I think the lite rail weighs about 11 oz, and the troy is 11.7.  Damn so I need a special tool to take it off and a standard barrel nut.  Anyone know where I can pick up a standard barrel  nut in the St. Louis area.

I have an extra if you want it.  Spare from a PSA kit.  IM me.  I drive all over the area for work.

i am not sure of not if you do.  but if you do and you can't find one local i can mail you one to borrow.  the pick from the site looks like a lite but i am not sure.  the rail they list it being i don't see on the site anywhere.  There is a regular M4 rail though and it has a more standard nut on it.  the picture of the gun on DD's site though and the picks of the M4 rail do not match though.

I looked and it says m4 rail nothing about lite.  I would imagine it is though because it weighs nothing.  It does have 6 Allen screws at the base of the barrel

Thanks for the offers gentlemen,  I am going to check with the armorer at work to see if he has any of this stuff first.

IMO you'd be downgrading going from a DD to a troy.

I am starting to lean more towards keeping the rail on.  I love the looks of the troy but I actually handled a rifle with a troy rail and it was kinda rough.
