There's a move afoot in the U.S. House to repeal virtually all the District's gun restrictions.
House Republicans tell The Washington Post that they're pushing for a vote before the November elections on a plan to end the city's ban on handguns and semiautomatic weapons. It would also lift registration requirements and cancel criminal penalties for possessing firearms. The measure would also keep the city's elected officials from enacting gun control laws.
The legislation has 228 co-sponsors, more than enough to clear the 435 member House.
Both sides doubt that such a measure would pass in the Senate, but both supporters and opponents of the plan say a vote during election season would call attention to the issue of gun control.
