Hi just wondering if any of you had been there? The range looks awesome

theres a thread about it on the co-ar15.com boards, but the directions to it are pretty vague.....

Im pretty sure its free to get in, but its like 2 hours away, and not knowing where to go to get there doesnt help either...

Directions and tales of previous experiences would be great if theyre available...

Thanks,
Kenny

I shot there a few years ago for a DOW Hunter Education instructor seminar.  It is a very good facility for a public range.

Its easy to find.  Turn at the dump, but hang a hard left and your there.

It's a great facility for an outdoor, public range.  Steels out to 1000 yds, trap/skeet, several pistol ranges, permanent restrooms, plenty of parking.

It gets a LOT of use but it always seems like there's room for everyone.  County land, DOW sponsored with help from a lot of locals and funds from the Friends of the NRA's annual banquet.

Located just off Hiway 285 at the top of what's called "dump hill", just look for the big, white fabric, quansit hut structure as a landmark.

That's the recycling center for the county landfill area right next to the ranges.  In all the times I've shot at the range I've never smelled the landfill.  It's a beautiful setting & you wouldn't hardly know the landfill was next to it but for a couple breaks in the trees.

It's first come, first served and free.  Observe range rules, firearms safety, and range 'manners', please.  There's no snow on the ground right now and the days have been mostly sunny & in the low 40's, lately.

Let me know if you come up.  I'll be happy to give you the 'nickle tour'.  I've got a gun or two I need to work with out there soon.

Welcome and enjoy!

Too far of a drive or the targets are too far away?

Yeah, I was referring to the drive being more than most want to incur from most of the front range localities.

Oh well,  I've tried the 'open invitation' here before w/no takers, yet many people seem to complain about no "good" places to shoot.

Guess we'll just keep it our little secret.

It's worth the drive if you need a place to stretch the legs on your rifle.  The rifle range has steel from 300 or so all the way out to 1020, most of it labeled with the distance.

The pistol berms and shotgun range looked nice too, I'm amazed at the quality of the facility, especially since it's free and open to the public.  Either there are no hoodlums in Chaffee county to mess it up or the volunteers that run it do a good job of running them off.

Bailagent or anyone else, can I shoot my full auto subgun (9mm) on the pistol berms there?

3-6 months from now this detail will be important to me also...

There's no R.O.'s present...ever.  The whole place is dependant on the honor system and people exercising common sense and courtesy.  Have never seen any signage prohibiting f.a. weapons on the site.

One of the pistol bays is set up to run basic tactical drills/scenarios and we've run transition drills between our AR's & handguns, there, regularly.

That's fine.  There's still no snow on the ground, here, but let's see what February & March (our snowiest month) bring.
