Does anyone know if Virginia accepts a DD214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) as proof of firearms training for a CCW application?  I have heard they do, but my DD214 doesn't reflect any firearms training or show any of my shooting badges.  I'm planning to apply in Alexandria, and I know that military firearms training counts as "competency" training, but how do you prove you have the training?

Thanks,
JDC

I believe it may depend on how long ago you were in.  If you were discharged 15 years ago then they might not accept it.  But if it is from last year then you should be set.

DD214 is good to go.

"Presenting evidence of equivalent experience with a firearm through participation in organized shooting competition or current military service or proof of an honorable discharge from any branch of the armed services"

Time of discharge makes no difference, DD214, active/reserve military ID, Discharge certificate, etc.

There's also this catch-all, as long as you can convince the clerk of circuit court that your training was adequate, you're good to go. If your specific method of proof is on the approved list, you are not required to show ANY further proof. There is a flap up in NOVA somewhere about an NRA course not counting, but from the website it's clear that they cannot disapprove you.

"Completing any other firearms training which the court deems adequate."

How can your DD214 NOT show your rifle qual? It should be on Member's Copy 2, along with all of your schools, MCI's and awards.

I'll have to look again, but I didn't see it on there.  It wouldn't surprise me at all if Admin left it off, of course then I'm the dumbass for signing it.

Makes me glad the .mil "gave" me a expert .45 pistol qualification (that I never did) on my DD-214; they short changed me an AAM, so I consider it an even trade.

DD214 worked well for me in WEST Virginia.

Oh, it was issued in 1971 as I am an old fart.
