M1 CARBINES SOON TO BE AVAILABLE FROM THE CMP . The Army has transferred to the CMP a significant quantity of M1 Carbines. We are currently processing these carbines through our Inspection & Repair operations and expect to have some ready for sale by 1 March, 2007, but it may be sooner. More information will be posted on http://www.odcmp.com/rifles/carbine.htm as it becomes available. At this time no decisions have been made as to grading, pricing, or limits. We are not accepting orders or establishing waiting lists at this time.

Since they removed the M1 carbine from the AWB list, would it be legal to order from CMP when they are available?

Sure would, and I'm going to be first in line.

Now that I've read the AWB a 2nd time, I'm thinking they're still illegal either way.  The ability to accept a high capacity magazine makes them out.

From the way the ban reads, anything that will take a magazine over 10 rounds is illegal.  I'm pretty sure that'd make a 10/22 illegal as well because there are larger magazines than that available on the market.

Not sure how this ban is going to pan out!

Man, that makes almost any pistol design illegal too, or is this only for rifles?

I'm so glad I don't really have to care about this too much, as I will be in Champaign for the next few years year round.

Pistols too.  Anything that can accept a mag bigger than 10 rounds is illegal, or it appears so from what I read.

Unless they passed a different version than the latest I had seen, you are mistaken. There are additional criteria which must be met for the Cook AWB.

For rifles, if it can accept detachable mags, then it cannot have:
- Pistol grip without a stock
- Forward grip
- Collapsable/folding stock
- Thumbhole stock
- Barrel shroud (kinda up in the air on the definition)
- Muzzle break/comp

For pistols, if it can accept detachable mags, then it cannot have:
- Forward grip (but that's an AOW anyway)
- Collapsable/folding stock (but that's a SBR)
- Thumbhole stock (again, a SBR)
- Barrel shroud (again, up in the air)
- Muzzle break/comp
- Ability to accept a mag outside of the grip

Rifles and pistols without detachable mags cannot have internal magazines with a capacity greater than 10 rounds.

This all applys only to semi-autos, of course. Certain shotguns are also banned.

M1 carbines *should* presumably be good to go - except for the paratrooper variants, of course.

Finally, I can get a nice M1 carbine at a good price!  +1 on the CMP road trip, or I may just do the mail order thingy again.

Are there 10 round or smaller mags available for M1 Carbines?

Yes.

I personally have a 10 rounder.  (But no M1 carbine ).

I think I got it off of Gunbroker, but they are pretty widely available.

Well semi-auto pistol it say..." but excluding a slide that encloses the barrel"

So as long as the mag holds 10 rounds or less, and no other evil features  .45 1911 should be legal.

Hypothetically speaking
