Howdy folks!  Have an opportunity to clear out some varmints from a couples land here in McHenry county.  Seeing as how coyotes are year round season and I'm on private property, does the law still apply that I cannot use a rifle (My AR-15 as the first choice) on private land?  Or does this apply for public/state/federal land?

I would love to use the AR, but I have the trusty Mossberg 500 12 gauge for being legal if need be.

What say you?

Are there other options for weapons for these 'yotes?

You can hunt them with your AR anywhere in IL.  The no rifle rule is for deer I think.  It might apply to other critters, but definitely not coyotes.

Taken from IDNR Rules and Regulations:
Coyotes can be hunted 24 hours a
day from 1/2 hour before sunrise on
November 10 through 12 midnight on
February 15 and electronic calling devicesmay
be used at night as well during
this period. During the rest of the year
hunting hours for coyotes are 1/2 hour
before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset.

Hunters need a hunting license and
habitat stamp
unless exempt (Illinois
no longer has a "furbearer stamp").

Coyotes may be hunted on private
property using
dogs, archery devices,
any type and caliber of
handgun, any type of legal
rifle including large capacity
semi-automatic rifles,
and shotguns using any type
of shell except for slugs
(note... there
are exceptions for slugs during the
firearm deer seasons when coyote
hunting is closed except to deer
hunters with unfilled firearm deer
permits in their possession). When
hunting with a shotgun, make sure
that the magazine has been fitted with
a plug which makes the shotgun incapable
of firing more than three consecutive
shots.

Electronic calling devices are
legal for coyote hunting.

It is legal to bait coyotes
as long as any wild
game that is used was
legally taken (a road kill deer
can be used as bait without first
reporting the road kill).

Illinois does not restrict the
type of sights or scopes that are
used
(including laser sights and
night vision scopes).

Lights with any color of lense can
be used while hunting coyotes
as long
as the lights are not used from any vehicle
or conveyance (including ATVs
and horses) and as long as the lights
are not connected to the vehicle or
conveyance.

Even though a coyote hunter can't be
charged if his dogs get away from
him and go onto property without the
landowner's permission, the coyote
hunter DOES NOT have the legal right
to follow the dogs onto the property
without landowner permission.

Coyote hunters are required to keep
their guns unloaded and in a case while
in a vehicle or on a conveyance
(including
but not limited to ATVs and
horseback unless exempt by special
Department permit).

Guns must remain unloaded until the
hunter is clear of the road as well as
the right of way alongside the road.

Coyote hunters must wear 400 square
inches of solid blaze orange when
hunting in a county when there is any
firearm deer season in progress including
youth seasons, muzzle loaderonly,
late-winter, and CWD seasons.

Before coyote hunting at public hunting
areas, check with the site office for site
specific regulations.

Also, the 300 yard rule applies if using anything but shotshells (then it is 100 yds.)

"Hunting near Inhabited Dwellings
It is unlawful to hunt or allow a dog to hunt
within 300 yards of an inhabited dwelling without
first obtaining permission of the owner or
tenant of the dwelling. EXCEPT: While trapping,
hunting with bow and arrow, or hunting with
shotgun using shotshells only, or on licensed
game breeding and hunting preserve areas,
on federally-owned and -managed lands, on
Department- owned, -managed, -leased or -
controlled lands and areas operated under a
Waterfowl HuntingArea permit, a 100-yard restriction
shall apply."

No FMJs. No mag restrictions either.

You know, just in case you get attacked by a pack of them

Looks like you're right.

I remembered it, but it was from the deer hunting section of the hunting digest. They don't say anything about ammo in the coyote section. My bad.

"Non-expanding, military-style full metal jacket bullets cannot be used to harvest white-tailed deer; only soft point or expanding bullets (including copper-alloy rounds designed for hunting) are legal ammunition."

Cool, thanks fellas.  I actually do have a 10 round mag, but, will most likely use a Pmag.  I have a couple boxes of the AE 63 grain soft point.  The ones that were a mil/le overrun.  I think I may use those, although, I do have some 60 Grain Vmax to load up.  Got 250 primed cases ready to go.

By the way, anyone want to buy some coyote pelts?

I want a .50 BMG for coyote hunting from 1000 yds away I have an awesome spot but there is no way to get into position without them busting me. If I could pop em from 1000 yds I could fill the bed of my truck in 1 trip.

AR-15 is OK with any mag I believe...The "no centerfire rifle" rule is for hunting public ground, I think...(state for sure, federal, i don't know)
