Ok this may seem stupid but I'll ask anyways.  We just moved to Wisconsin this summer (few miles north of Hartland).  I called home to see how the old folks were doing and they had mentioned they found a rather large sized crap in the yard.  Right now they are wondering if it could have been a cougar.  Reason I ask is that the family is concerned about our two dogs.  Anyone know/hear of cougars being in this area?

I'm not sure exactly where Hartland is, but I'm in Mountain, WI - I've personally seen two cougar, and a black panther. Though the DNR denies they exist... :(

It's about 40-45 mins west of Milwaukee.  I have heard of them being in the northern parts of WI.  Just not sure if they venture this far south.

They might, but I highly doubt it. Even if they did, you'd have to live in a VERY remote part to even put your dogs in danger, even then it's highly unlikely. They don't like dogs very much.

Yeah I wouldn't say we're all that remote.  We live on 3 wooded acres on top of a hill.  Immediately where we live there are about 4 houses on 12+ acres.  The only reason I could think of one being around is that my mother feeds the deer.

I would still say you wont have to worry about it, simply because they're very sly creatures, and whenever I've seen them it was 10 miles into the Nicolet National Forest, and 500 yards away at the closest... :D

Yeah that's what I figured.  It doesn't bother me in the least.  I figure gotta tell my mother something since she's all worried about going in the woods and her precious cocker

She wasn't satisfied with the aliens reply I gave her.

Well I can tell you this. Moutain lions, possible cougars, more than likely ML's have been spotted severaly times by many people in the Broofield area. My brother even has what appears to be claw marks on a few of the trees on his property. The marks are high enough up in the tree that it isn't a dog.
The DNR has been called numerous times about the sightings and they are tight lipped about the whole thing. They will neither confirm nor deny the presence of any mountain lions in the area.

Hartland is far enough away from Brookfield, but it is certainly not out of the rehlm of possibility.

I'm in SE Waukesha. My wife says she saw a large cat stalking/watching our dog play just outside the treeline in the backyard last spring. Her eyes are good and she'd have no reason to lie. We didn't call the DNR because I thought it was cool and didn't want them poking around my place. My 60lb golden would have been tore up by a ML so I'm glade she was able to get her inside before anything bad happened. On the plus side my wife wanted to learn how to use the shotgun after that.

Jake I'll 2nd that.  I can't wait to get home in hopes of catching a glimpse of something.  I find it kinda cool.  Back when I lived in IL we had coyote problems.  They were stalking dogs and there were documented cases of them being taken.  I technically live in Merton but our mailing address is Hartland.
