Thinking about taking a job in Spokane WA and living in Coeur d'Alene.  What can you tell me about Coeur d'Alene?  From what I gather it's near some great hunting and it's beautiful.  Cost of living seems really reasonable in comparison to where I live now (West of Portland OR).

How is the crime, weather, etc...  I'd like to hear the good with the bad.

Thanks.

I'm not in CDA but from all accounts it's a nice town.  But working in SpoCompton and living in CDA is a wise move.  Get your Enhanced CCW and you can carry in both states.

I'm told the weather can be somewhat cold in the winters up there but it's all what you're used to.  Compared to where I lived before Boise, ID, I'd say the climate is mild.  Then again winters I spent in Korea and Russia were down right brutal.

Crime seems to be on the rise, or perhaps it seems like it is because all I'm seeing in the news is a spike in it.  A CDA Police officer was just killed a few days ago.  We are getting alot of shitheads from out of state stirring up trouble and others who are evading the law by laying up in rural areas of the state.  Like anywhere else just listen to your Spidey senses and keep your stuff locked up and you'll be fine.  The biggest thing I hear from people is, "This is Idaho, it's safe here."  Well you never know what you'll run across.

Idaho is a sportsmans paradise, you'll find that out when you get here.

If you haven't already, come and check out the area before committing to the job, but I'm sure once you see the CDA area you'll make your mind up pretty damn quick.

Add Post Falls to your list of possible locations.  It's smack dab in the middle between Spokane and Coeur d' Alene.  Easy commute to either.  Property in PF is $10-15K for comparable average regular Joe sized lots.
If you have more to spend, you can find shop sized lots a little easier in PF.

The only trouble with PF, is its greatest selling point I mentioned above...It is in between two higher profile locations.  If you want to do fun stuff, dine out, shop, etc you have to go somewhere else to do it.

CdA is a resort town, with all of the high and low points. Consider Rathdrum and the area around it.

One downside of your arrangement is that Washington doesn't have income tax, and Idaho does, so you'll have (slightly less) take home pay.

ID's income tax is a substantial improvement to OR's.  We can still take the hit and come out ahead.

We will probably try to find a more rural location.

Also does anyone know what the water tables are in that area?  We found some really nice acreage that we might build on that would need a well drilled.

Coeur d'Alene is a great place to live. I live in Cda but, Drive to the N end of Spokane for work. 37 miles one way.  Love that right to work State BS.

Yes crime is on the rise but still considerably less than Spokane and Portland areas.

If your looking for acreage then you will need to look elsewhere in the surrounding areas (Hayden, Post Falls, Rathdrum, Dalton Gardens) Cda has ran out of room and make more money on property tax with homes instead of acreage.

The water table is litteraly right below us. We sit on the Rathdrum prarie aquafur, And will be a pain to do some drilling into it. Then again anything sitting above it is a pain to get approved. As far a building permits are concerned, Gotta show draiage and impact on the Aquafir, Etc.

What else ya wanna know???

I was born and raised in the CDA/PF area.  Went to "Harvard on the lake" and joined the service in '98, I've been back a few times to visit family and friends.  Although, it was well on its way to being considered a down right tourist trap well before I left it has gotten even worse since.  You used to be able to take a boat and find any number of nice beaches along the lake for a family to spend the day.  I was fishing on the lake a few years ago and absolutely wanted to throw up after seeing all the posted signs on beaches everywhere.  Not to mention the eye sore houses people have built all over it.  You couldn't pay me enough to live there again.  Most of my family that still reside there and we are talking some that have lived in the area for several generations deep are disgusted by the way it has changed.  People from other (states) coming in, seeing it, claiming it as their own and attempting to change it into what they want.  Ok, enough of the rant.  Sadly, I would still have say that it is vast improvement over Portland.  And yes, if you want land look to the Rathdrum area.  Of, course I haven't been out there since I left so, it's probably all condos and subdivisions by now anyway.
