I'm looking to go camping this week I'm in Hampton Roads but I'm willing to go a few hours out.  Anyone know anywhere good?  I'm looking at going to Pocahontas State Park right now but am looking for some input from anyone who's been camping around VA.

never camped at pocahontas, simply because i live too close
however, nice park, good fishing, should be quiet this time of year, the pool doesn't open till sometime in may

What kind of camping do you want to do?

Do you want well defined camp spots, with the possibility of having others around or do you want to hike in and pick your own spot?

Based on the Pocahontas park map it looks like you must camp within its specific camp areas and you are limited to where those are.

Evidently there are tons of places to camp in richmond. There are a few gentleman camping behind my apartment right now. Thier gear is a little crude but they seem to be having a good time. Sometimes they crap in my walkway.

I've walked the trails of Pochahontas and it's pleasant enough, but the camping I believe is in well defined spots.

If you want more choices, ask the BSA office if you can camp.  I don't know thier policy, but there's a BSA camp a couple of miles from Pochahontas (Albright) and another in Goochland (Douglas Fleet).

More premative yet would be the wildlife management areas.  I got permission to take scouts out there years back.  I believe you'll have to share with the turkey hunters tho.

Where have you camped that you've liked?

Almost all of the WMA have primitive camping like kdmoore said. You can find of a list of them available here: www.dgif.virginia.gov/wmas/

The Chickahominy WMA is out in Charles City and has a decent shooting range if you wanted to do some shooting/camping.

I do believe I read somewhere on the DGIF website that loaded weapons are not permitted unless during legal hunting seasons or if you have a CHL

they had a decent camping area, but changed it a few years ago,
if i am not mistaken, it was updated (if that's possible) and is now on the 'backside' of the parking lot for the pool,  where swift creek comes into the big lake,

may be a bit wet now, with all the rain we have had,,,,

I ended up going to Pocahontas and did a little camping.  It was cold and windy but it was a good warmup camping session for the summer.  Hiked a few of the trails wanted to do some fishing but didn't have time.

I was looking for something with more wildlife (did see a bunch of deer run by) don't need too many amenities just running water nearby.

What were the campsites like? Were they well established with a bunch of campsites near by or were they well spaced out? Any pics?

The campsites were well established, firepits, tables, tent pad, bathrooms, showers, etc... Not really what I was looking for.  Also it was too close to town I was joking with my wife that if we hiked longer we would end up behind walmart.

I don't mind it being too close to down, i mean it has 7000 acres.

I just would like somewhere close (an hour or so drive) with some more primitive camping with no one around.
