INDUSTRY, Calif. -- A California Highway Patrol officer was shot and wounded following a chase Saturday, and two people were arrested hours later, authorities said.

The officer, whose name was not immediately released, tried to stop a sport utility vehicle without license plates that was speeding on the San Gabriel River Freeway east of Los Angeles shortly before 4 a.m., CHP Officer Rick Quintero said.

A chase ended a mile or two later when the SUV crashed on an off-ramp, and then the driver and passenger got out, Quintero said.

"They opened fire on our officers and fled on foot," Quintero said.

The officer and his partner returned fire but did not strike anyone, Quintero said.

The officer was shot in the lower torso and was listed in stable condition at a hospital.

The wound was not considered life threatening, and the officer was expected to recover, Quintero said.

A dog from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department was brought in to search the area. About two hours later, a suspect was found hiding and arrested, followed two hours later by another suspect, Quintero said.

Armando Saucillo, 21, of Bell Gardens, and a boy whose name was not immediately released because he is a juvenile, were booked on investigation of attempted murder, sheriff's Deputy Maribel Rizo said.
