I'm buying a new car,is it required by Illinois law that you have to pay the "doc fee"?
Thanks for the input.

It's not required by law, but there is a law that caps the doc fee.  The cap is $161.39 for 2012.

Dealers have been sued (and have lost) over waiving the doc fee, because charging the fee to some customers but not others is discriminatory.

It's been a couple years since I bought a car, but at the time, every dealer simply charged the max that the law allowed.  Noone was willing to budge on it

Built in profit. A/k/a a fee you pay for them to fill out all paperwork related to the sale.

I bought a car last night, G35 coupe, and there was a doc fee of $161.  I was told this is a fee to import a car from outside the US.  But it seems they are also applied to domestic brands to cover shipping charges from the factory.

I always told dealer, that if they wanted to sell car, they eat the doc fee or no deal. Call it whatever you want, but it is pure profit for the dealer and adds to the
cost of the car.

Also had them try to add in rustproofing, cleanup detail fee and other bullshit fees. Tell them "NO" in no uncertain terms. Stand your ground in negotiations.

I had a few tell me no and I walked right out the door, but I never got very far without them running after me and agreeing to drop the price that amount.

Remember, you have the money that they want. Go to another dealer and tell them what you will pay less than the previous dealer.

Good luck.
