Anyone know of a good Birmingham area gunsmith?  I picked up a Winchester 1897 this weekend and it has a cut down barrel.  Need to get a bead site installed and possibly a re-blue.

I have never found a gunsmith worth a damn in Birmingham. If you find one let me know. You might want to send that gun to a specialist.

If you don't mind the drive down to Prattville, Wayne Driver at  Old Ridge Gun Repair does good work.  I haven't had anything of mine worked on, but I do know two people that he had done work for and they were both very happy with his work.  His contact information is:

Old Ridge Gun Repair
1208 Ricky Drive
Prattville, Alabama 36066
334-361-1448
by appointment only

There used to be a great -- not good, great -- gunsmith in the B'ham area but, sadly, he passed away many years ago.

I miss Harry

I came into an older 1911 he had completely reworked/refinished a few years back, very good work IMHO.

I have to travel to Montgomery for business fairly often so this may be a good possibility.

I've heard good things about JP Precision in Anniston. Never used them before.

Chattahoochee Gun Works in Phenix city.

It is a little of a drive but Robs work is top notch.

Depending on what side of Birmingham you live on, Mr. Gatlin out in Coldwater should be able to take care of it.

This. Jody is good people and an excellent smith. He did a cutdown/thread and some other work on a 700 of mine. He is also into 1911's and Garands.

I've used Grady Butler in Pleasant Grove.

He cut down a couple of single shot shotguns and reattached the beads.

He also lightly customized a 1911 for me.

Good work and very quick turnaround-like, under a week.

YMMV, he has a full time job and sidelines gunsmithing.

PM if you want his number.
