Defensive Concepts North Carolina will be teaching our 1 day Basic Carbine course on 17 July 2010 in Carthage, NC. If anyone is interested, feel free to contact me through site PM or email me at [email protected] . You can also register for the class by going to http://www.defensiveconceptsnc.com/register.php . We also now have an option for you to pay online when you register for the course.

Here is a brief run down about the course:

Basic Carbine

The Basic Carbine course is designed to provide each student with the core skills needed to properly use the carbine in a safe and effective manner in defensive situations. The course curriculum covers the following topics: marksmanship fundamentals (sight alignment, sight picture, trigger manipulation, zeroing of sights), carbine manipulation (loading, unloading, malfunction clearance), and extensive shooting drills at various distances using several shooting positions. This is a one day class.

The course tuition is $150 plus $25 range fee.

Students will need:
1 semi-auto carbine (AR15, AK, Mini-14, etc) with a Minimum of 3 Magazines (.22LR and pistol caliber carbines are acceptable)
A method of carrying 2 magazines on the firing line
500 Rounds of Ammunition
Pen/Pencil and Paper
Ear and Eye Protection
Hand cleaner might be a good thing too

The detailed list of items needed can be found here

After taking this class with Chris and Paul last September (Steve had an emergency work call), and a number of gentlemen here, if you are on the fence I'd really suggest you get off it and go - especially if you have not taken a carbine class before as its an excellent one. All who attended will say the same and there is a thread somewhere around Sept 19-20 of last year.

If you grab your carbine in your home I think you'll have a better idea of how to use it properly, and safely, after the class.

P.S. Chris, I hope you get that link to the doc treating my shoulder. This cortisone shot is wearing off and I really need to see her again I'm doing the physical therapy but I don't know if really does anything unless they replaced a body part.

Man, I cannot make this one.

When do you see the next 1 day pistol course happening at Carthage?

We rarely do a 1 day handgun class in Carthage; those are typically done at our Oakboro location. One could be done up there; but there would have to be significant interest.

Does the rifle need to have standard sights? Or could you bring a Eotech or Acog?

I am thinking about taking this class. I however am in a budget right now will standard ear plugs work or do I need to splurge for electronic and how much does a good pair run me and what do you reccomend for a budget for a set of electronic ear muffs?

Plugs are ok. The cheapest electronic ear pro that I know of are the Howard Leights.

This is good advice for the question. Regular foam ear pro is just fine for a carbine course. Remember you are there to learn and do not worry too much about being tacticool. In fact you will probably get a better idea of what you do like and dislike about gear by just talking with your fellow shooters.

I use a pair of Howard Leights. They are good inexpensive electronic ear pro. I think that there is a really good sale on them at overstock.com right now too

Go!  Even on a budget a course is a wise decision and investment. You will have a great time as they run a great course and you will learn more than you think you will from both the instructors and your fellow students

Good luck!

Lots of alumni in this thread!

I think I've taken this course 3 times now and have had a blast each time. I highly recommend to anyone thinking about it. And as other have said before, don't get yourself too worried about gear. An AR with a good sling is your basic starting point. I've seen guys excel with very little gear, so little that they were pulling spare mags out of their back pockets.

How did the course go?  Any good lessons learned?

It was an outstanding course.  Chris, Paul and Steve are great instructors who know their stuff and don't mince words.  It was a small class; only 5 students, but that small class size allowed for very focused instruction and everyone seemed to pick up the material very quickly.  I became "that guy" with the malfunctioning gun, with two stuck cases after lunch and I wound up using my back-up rifle to finish the course... I'll probably keep the steel cased ammo for practice only from now on as a result.  I learned a great deal about both my skill and my equipment (which needs a few upgrades... sturdier mag pouches, dump pouch).  I'll definitely be coming back to train with DCNC.

On that note, if one of you guys reads this, do you have any CCH classes planned for September?  I don't see any on the site.
