Keep an eye out on your accounts. Due to a whole pile of recently enacted banking laws limiting fees charged on debit card transactions, atms, overdrafts, etc, the old days of free savings/checking for small accts is vanishing. I am going to have to close a couple of accounts i have a bank of america because I can't keep up with their BS. I bank at schwab primarily but kept these BOA accts open with $500 or so for cashing checks, atms, etc. Now they are trying to charge $12/month unless you keep a larger balance AND direct deposit.

Bastards.

it's not the banks' fault it is the gov't and their so-called consumer protection law....banks are a business like any other and are entitled to make a profit...if the gov't changes the law they have to change........if you think this is bad just wait until obamacare is fully implemented...

we got a letter from Bank of America staing there would be a 15 dollar a month checking fee now, we have been with them for 12 years and have always done what we are supposed to. it sucks that BOA is adding fees everywhere. do agree with the post about, it's the governments fault, they just keep making things better

I have BOA as well.  There is no fee if you have direct deposit and deposit money and take out money using an ATM machine.  I am still going to switch banks because BOA is always looking to get fees somehow.  There are plenty of banks like Flagstar that even reimburse your for foreign ATM fees.  I am moving on as well.

I left BOA when they started allowing illegals to get credit cards. They ran a program where they didn't require you to give your SSN to do a credit check and still gave out credit cards. At the time I tried to get a consolidation loan and they kept doing this crap... so I said hello to another bank.

USAA (have to have been in the military to join them) instituted many of the changes before this all started but also does a better job of explaining how the fees kick in and when. Still free-checking though.

Delta Community Credit Union...anyone can be a member Delta CU they have local branches everywhere, great loan rates, and they won't nickel and dime you like a "for profit" bank.  As a matter of fact, if the Credit Union turns a profit, it is returned to the shareholders, directly in your account.  Secured by the CU version of the FDIC.   The GOV had to step in with some of the fraudulent credit card practices the banks were using.  The Monster mega banks are all crooks whom I choose not to do business with.  Think real hard about those tools charging you absurd fees after taking bail out money from you, at gunpoint. (to fill in for the bad investments that they made)

This.  I've used them since I worked for Delta in 2000, but now since they've expanded most anyone can join I think.  Awesome bank.

Delta Credit union has a online deposit (for checks up to 500) where you just enter the info online, print a form and mail it  with the check, deposit is immediate.  They are part of the Credit union service centers which puts branches darn near everywhere.

Several years ago I had an account at a bank in my hometown.  I didn't use it much but I liked having it for when i was back home.  Didn't look at the statements for several months, then saw they had started charging a $30 per month "online banking inactivity fee".  $30 per month for not loging into online banking.  I raised hell, got my money back, and closed my account.

In an unrelated incident I get a phone call out of the blue from a collection agency.  I think it's a scam, but decide i should look into it.  Long story short I had closed out two accounts I had at peachtree national bank 9 years prior, or so I thought.  The second account was never closed and had about $100 left in it.  After I "closed" the account I never recieved a statement, but at some point the bank was sold to bank of north georgia who started charging me a $10 per month maintnence fee.  They drained my account to -$30 and sent it to a collection agency.  It took weeks of raisning hell to get the problem fixed, and I was in my last year of law school and applying to take the bar.  I had to explain the whole thing to the state bar, and thought for a moment it was going to keep me from being able to take the bar for 6 months or a year which would have cost me thousands in lost wages.  It all worked out in the end, but caused me a hell of a lot of stress. Oh and I never got my $100 back. Banks suck.  Keep an eye on your accounts and close any accounts you don't use.
