HI!

Well, NJM1A and I have been chatting a bit recently (since he lives about 10 minutes from my place) and we've made plans to do a bit of fun shooting.  Since neither of us have a membership at any range, we plannned to hit the WMA shotgun range in Winslow this coming Sunday (Aug. 7th) around 10:am to blast some dirt and grass with our shotguns and maybe our .22's.  
What does this mean to you?  
Well, NJM1A and I both have plans to join the SJSC eventually (money's always an issue...) and would love to have tour of the facility and even a chance to shoot there.  So, if any of you are headed to the Club this Sunday (Aug. 7th) and wouldn't mind bringing along a pair of level-headed guys (and AR15.com members) as guests, feel free to contact us or reply to this thread.  ([email protected])

In other news, I finally finished my first AR (and first "build") based off of the lower receiver I bought from Bobby_the_Hun at the first Fort Dix shoot earlier this year.  I haven't had a chance to drop the hammer on a loaded chamber yet, though. his

Bushmaster Flattop upper, 20" HBAR barrel (used from the EE, great price though)
Standard carry handle (not shown, also from the EE)
3 of PK90's 15 Rd. mags (Thanks, PK90!)

I have a few questions about the build though... I'll add them later on.

What time are you going?  I may be there in the afternoon.

I need to try out my new 30 & 50 Caliber ARs.  

NJM1A and I are planning on 10:am at the Winslow WMA range just up the street from the club.  We could probably delay that till later if it works with your schedule better, PK90.

ETA: And we'd *gladly* assist you in testing those AR's in any way.

Now here's some questions:
1) I don't think the rear sight is straight.  I can actually rotate it by hand till it is straight, but its not loose, more like "spring-loaded" as it returns to this position automatically.  Any thoughts on this?  Does it matter?

2) Is the carry handle supposed to line up exactly with the rear of the upper reciever? Or is this normal?

3) I want to customize this a bit by adding a little color.  I want to paint the aluminum heat shield under the guards up front, but am concerned about heat problems (cracking/peeling).  I'm OK with using the high-temp spray paint (Krylon, Rustoleum, etc.) but I don't find any other color except black, white and grey.  What do you think of coating them with the high temp spray as a primer for a color coat?  I suppose I could just do it and strip it if it starts to peel or crack (or call it a special uber-custom "crackelure" paint-job Herehttp://mywebpages.comcast.net/delbruc/pics/ar/shield.jpg

Crank the sight all of the way up. There should be a small BB (w/ spring underneath) on the front face of the rear sight housing. Make sure it is there.

You can try using the high temp paint they spray on brake calipers.  I know they come in all different colors, like white, red, yellow, blue and gold.

You are exactly correct only one ball bearing is in there, though I can't crank it up very far to see.  I'm in the process of taking the retaining roll-pin out to see if there is a spring in there or if I need to replace them both.  Thanks for the  opinion, its why I love this place.

Post-investigation Edit...
Well, I was a bit pre-mature in my analysis.  It turns out that there is only one ball/spring tensioner in the face of that assemby, when I *thought* there would be 2 to balance it out..

Is this place to expect a spring/ball tensioner/detent?  I mean something has to keep it facing straight right?  There is one that is directly below these holes that holds the ball for the lower adjustment ring.  It also looks as is the larger spring in the center post has been cut when compared to the pic on the DPMS site.  I was told this was DPMS part when I bought it, maybe worth a call or e-mail to them for more info...

I am a post editing fool tonight (or maybe just a fool...).  Looking at the DPMS site gets this:
Link to DPMS A2 rear sight parts kit  Which clearly shows 3 small springs and balls for them, while I only have 2 in my assembly.  I did buy this used, so I guess that's to be expected...  I will contact them tomorrow and see what they tell me.  Anyone have experience with thier support?

You or anybody can be my guest.  The SJSC wants $10 per person for the day.  I most likely will be there @ 1 PM, but can't commit just yet.  I'll know better by Saturday night.

Actually I've completely disassembled the rear sight and that was only the second ball/spring I found (under the adj. wheel), so it is indeed missing one set somewhere.  Thanks for all of your help, I hope DPMS will help me out too.

ETA that I am a dumbass...  The third spring and ball is under the left/right (windage?) adjustment knob, so I do actually have all 3 of those... Duh... Hmmm...  Looking at some A2 sight assembly diagrams shows a flat spring piece of metal (that I just found out is under the aperature, duh,)

So in the end I have all of the parts but the rear sight is still turned as listed in the original question post...

General build questions update ( instead of all the post editing I've been doing):

I have all of the rear sight parts that are listed in the many manuals I've read (including the nice one in the information area right here on ar15.com), so I will re-assemble the entire sight and see if it is still crooked like in the above picture.  If so, then I'll reach out for more help.

Still looking for an opinion about the position of the carry handle in relation to the upper reciever.

I just looked at an OlyArms rear A2.  It acts and looks like you describe, but not as much as your pic shows.  "I can actually rotate it by hand till it is straight, but its not loose, more like "spring-loaded" as it returns to this position automatically."  IMO, I don't think this matters.

Cool, thanks for verifying that I am not a complete blithering idiot...    I don't know how it could affect accuracy as we'll still be looking through the aperature at the front sight.  If it annoys me or somehow does affect it then I'll figure what to do then.  The first step is to actually shoot it...

Does SJSC have a 1 member/1 guest policy or can you get both NJM1A and I in on Sunday?
