I'm looking to take the wife on a date, and we're looking at the Varsity, since it's a favorite.  But I'd like to scope out a good hamburger place.  Tell me about your favorite.  I don't just mean name it, but tell me ABOUT it- where's it at, what's the atmosphere, what makes it great?

I already know that the Vortex is out, because the wife is pregnant, and an establishment that allows smoking is a no-go.

Does the Vortex in midtown allow smoking? I know the one at L5P does, not sure about downtown.
Me and Ashleigh have eaten a lot of burgers. I'll ask her about it.

If you go to Athens, Volstead has really really good burgers, and so does the Grill. The Volstead is a bar/burger joint. Their burgers are all unique, and there is always some special flare about them. The service is good, but getting food is pretty slow. Fries are amazing too.
The Grill is known for being a burger joint. They have unique burgers too, where the flavoring is mixed with the meat. Its an old timey place, that has fountain soda.

Come up here to Jefferson and go to the Savory Spoon. My favorite burgers are there. Just a relaxing place with exceptional service. Menu changes weekly, and everything is made in house.

I don't know if it's my favorite, but The Chop House in Madison is up there on my list.  Certainly not a burger-centric restaurant, but still good.  Taco Mac, although a liberal establishment, makes a tasty burger.  And, Jeff, you're not giving me any information to help me make my decision.  A name doesn't sell me.

Flip burger boutique, one in Roswell in Buckhead and the other in howell mill in midtown , you can seat inside and outside very different but outstanding burgers, shakes and beers top, very fancy compared to any other burger place

The Counter in Roswell has pretty good burgers; unique place.

You choose everything from type of meat, to the type of bun, type of sauce and the toppings.

They also have great shakes and malts.

Then you can swing by Sharpshooters and Truprep which are right across the street from each other and about two miles from the counter; or stop at Andreties and drive go carts.

...

Yes, both allow smoking. The owners are big Libertarians and didn't agree with the smoking ban.

As for burgers: Farm Burger in downtown Decatur is good. I like the Vortex better, but still very good.

Check out this page. I've tried a few - http://atlanta.eater.com/archives/2013/04/15/atlantas-best-burgers-by-neighborhood.php

Flip burger has an incredible Krispy Kreme milk shake. Think doughnut through a straw.

In addition they serve a raw burger.

+1 for Farm Burger.  I don't seek out burger places very often so not sure how it compares to some of the others mentioned.  I do eat there when in Decatur.  Grass fed beef ... Just check out their menu/ website.  I was disappointed last time I went and they didn't have the pickled veggies.  .  That was early spring, so they probably have them now.  Fries were good though.  May have to head back down there.

I like mine loaded up with their house mayo (worcestershire in it), grainy mustard and fresh jalepeno's!

Flipped is pretty neat albeit a bit spendy for a burger. It's owned and run by Richard Blaze from Top Chef fame; he's famous for his use of liquid nitrogen and other 'cutting edge' cooking techniques. It's a bit on the trendy side but his liquid nitrogen shakes rock, try the 'Krispy Kream' shake with a whole doughnut in each one.

ETA....Finch and Holeman is supposed to have one of the best burgers in the country but getting one is next to impossible, (they serve 50 only on Sat after 10pm.)

The burger at The General Muir next to Emory and the CDC is outstanding.  The Counter and Farm burger are also good as well, but the Muir takes the cake.

My hands down absolute best burger joint is the EARL, in East Atlanta Village.   The place is rowdy on Friday and Saturday nights with live music in the back (separate room) , decorated with concert memorabilia and graffiti, and plays good music (alternative, rock, some lighter punk)   The burgers are fantastic, there is a good variety of them. My favorite is the black and blue, burger cooked to order, but in Cajun blackened style, with bleu cheese and bacon.  The fixings are always very fresh, ad the burgers are served with the incredibly hard choice of tater tots, or sweet potato fries with dipping sauce.   Great beer selection, good people watching, and if the place is busy, expect to share a table with other folks, who you will probably have a good laugh with.   Coffee, cupcake, and knick knack shops nearby make a nice evening for a couple.

Smoking is allowed, but there is outdoor dining available, and indoor dining by large open windows.  A buddy of mine is very sensitive to smoke, and it is on his good list.   The Midtown Vortex is pretty darn smoky, but worth a visit after the baby has arrived, dinner, followed by a few drinks at the comedy club inside the Vortex, the Laughing Skull Lounge.

I'll also add Village Burger in dunwoody. It's not my favorite burger, but the fries and seasoning are awesome. The frozen custard is good, too. Just a good all-around neighborhood burger spot. Not worth a drive from the outlying areas, but if you're around dunwoody, sandy springs, Chamblee, it's worth trying one day.

the BEST burgers can be found at this place:

There are many locations in ATL area. Just google Ted's Montana Grill.  Fantastic burgers (in beef or bison, your choice), Classic western-style decor.  Borax soap in the bathroom is awesome.

Varsity is okay for a fast food place, burgers are paper thin.

We don't get burgers at the varsity, and really, who goes there for top-quality food?  It's the overall experience.  I've had many a burger at Ted's. they're good, but I can get a chain restaurant burger all over the place. There are decent burgers at many of the chains.

Going to Ted's is about as exciting as Applebees. It's like suggesting Sonny's or Dickies when someone wants a great BBQ place.  Chains are OK if you just have to stop somewhere and eat, but are not much fun for an evening out.

Farm burger is great.  Probably my favorite.  If you are going for burger joint, and not a restaurant that makes burgers among all the other stuff there or Grind House Killer Burgers are 2 of my favorites.  Grind House also has some adult milk shakes, and a decent beer selection.
