A reader who knows a lot more than I do about guns (sorry, drill sergeant, it's a gun) clears up the question of whether AK-47s (in use by GIs in Iraq) could use U.S. ammo:


The ak-47 does use the 7.62 X 39. However, the m-60 and the m-14 use the 7.62 X 51. These rounds are not interchangable, as the second number indicates the length of the cartridge case, in mm.
The 7.62 X 39 is similar in power to a 30.30 while the 7.62 X 51 is the military equivilant of the .308 winchester, which is similar in power to the 30.06.

Hmmm a writer from the Dallas Morning News at the Tom Bean shoot his weekend. Be afraid very afraid. The DMN is not the most 2nd Amend. friendly paper in America by a long shot.

 This is an excellent idea.  The writer could see and fire the firearms he has limited knowledge about.
 Good public exposure can gain public support and that's worth dozens of letters to elected officials.
