The job would be a promotion from a GS-12 to a GS-13.  I would only be there for 4 years before I started looking for something else in a free state.

But, how expensive is it to live there.  What kind of house can I get for $300,000 in a safe area?

Are you looking to buy in the city or county?  What size house?  Cockeysville is a decent area.  You can find something for 300ish there.  Doubt you can find much for 300 closer to the city in a decent area.

Harford County is pretty decent, about 1/2 North of the city.

Don't buy in Baltimore. You'll either never sell it or never get back what you put into it. Buy in PA and commute down. Trust me. I work out of Baltimore several times a month.

I left a GS-11 & took a GS-10 to get OUT of Bawlimere.  One of the few smart things I've done in life.

I wouldn't go back for a GS-20 pay grade.
