I'm just curious if there is any interest in an AK receiver folding party near Austin.  I don't have any details, I'm just looking for interest.

I don't have a flat to fold, but if you do fold one in Austin, I'd like to watch.

I'm in Austin about 2 times a month and would be happy to help/bring building tools. I have a folding jig, rivet smashers, barrel press tools, etc.

Lemme know...

Absolutely...AK's are dirty, stinkin, commie, cosmoline slathered guns.

...And everyone should have a crate of them.

How soon are you wanting to do this? I can come down to Austin the week of Oct 17 Tuesday or Wednesday that week. I am also available the Monday and Tuesday before Thanksgiving.

If someone has tools and know how I am ready. I need to order some compliance parts.

Thanks,
Bryan

If you have a vise, hammer, punch, and drill, it would be best if you can remove the rivets from your trigger guard before the build party. This is one step that could save a lot of time.

Tutorial?

Clamp it in a vise, grind down rivets flat on the receiver side. Center punch the rivet and drill all the way through with a bit that is a little smaller than the rivet diameter. Then either keep stepping up the drills til it falls out, or punch it out with punch and hammer.

Be careful not to over size the holes. A little is ok, since the crushed new rivet will take up some of the slop, but a totally egged out hole is not good.

You can actually get trigger guards and mag stop plates (the little plate that goes between the trigger guard and the bottom of the receiver) ready to go from some places. I think I got some for under $15, and I think it's worth the time to not have to mess with the cut up kit part. Just my opinion.

And what do you need to come to this little "Party"

When it's done, do you have a complete rifle?

Hey Guys,
I originally put the question out about having a flat folding party.  So far, it looks like there is lot's of interest for build party where you come away with a complete rifle, but not all that much  interest in getting together to fold some flats.   I believe one person wanted to watch and everyone else was not clear on their flat folding interests.

I am willing to host a flat folding party at my house in Round Rock.  Unfortunately I can't host a build party where people are running around with AK's.  My wife and neighbors would not be happy.  As far as a date, I am thinking about a weekend around the end of October or the beginning of November.  If it doesn't happen then, I'll have to wait until the some time in 2006.

As far as equipment goes:  I have some basic hand tools, a map gas torch for hardening, , and  I should have a 12 ton press by then.  I'll also plan on getting some stamping tools to mark receivers.   Items still needed are:  a folding jig.  It would also be nice to have: a spot welder, some clamps, and some sort of hammer for making the top rails look good.

The things people need to bring are:  1) Flats.  2)  A good attitude,  3)  Some food and drink, and 4) anything that makes folding a flat easier.

Please email directly with your level of interest.

Thanks
Chris

I have the folder, and would be avail in early Nov. (Carbine class up here in Dallas end of Oct.).

A note... set up some policy on keeping the neighbors happy...namely arrive with guns cased and all parts boxed or otherwise concealed. I have had people show up to my house in the Burbs, walk up to my front door with long guns and really freak out the neighborhood watch. A little bit of prevention goes a long way.

If you build in an open garage, it's not hard to stack boxes and park cars so that the casual passer-by doesn't see much but guys mulling around...and such.

Going to email with this...

I can order a bending Jig if someone will have a press and hardening equipment and welder.

If someone has a bending jig then I can order the rivet jigs, etc..

I have the bending and rivet jigs, I think the tongs and spot welder would be the missing thing that would make things easy and fast.

Welding side rails is not tough, but it takes time and is a hassle...
