Long time DirecTV subscriber (1997) happy with the service and technology (whole house networking & DVR, etc.), but CB has just installed Fioptics in our neighborhood and is offering some very interesting deals.  Currently use TWC for Internet and Home phone (VOIP) @ 30 Mb speed, but its almost a no brainer to switch to Fioptics for their  Internet/Phone service for 50 Mb at same price point.  Even better deals if you go all in and add TV to bundle.  It would mean losing NFL Sunday Ticket, my only way to watch my hometown team.  How is the TV service?

I was paying $115 a month for TWC. Canceled cable last December and reduced my internet to 15 MB, which is $14.99 a month. Which BTW is fast enough to stream 1080P video on Netflix as long as no one else is using the internet.

Then I bought on of these boxes and an HD antenna.

In Cincinnati I can pick up over 60 channels for free, all in HD. No monthly fee, it has a TV guide 7 days in advance, I set entire seasons to record, have it only record new episodes, etc...
I have it record, 20/20, Dateline, Simpsons, Big Bang Theory, Family Guy, The Middle, Modern Family, Survivor, The Walking Dead, etc...

I think it paid for itself in like 3 months, Ive saved almost 1000 in the last year.

I do still have Netflix but am considering canceling that as well. But if I cancel it I would loose Hulu as I share passwords with a friend. So for $8 I get two services, not bad I suppose.

As for sports if you buy a Apple TV or Roku you can buy like the NFL package, which is every game for $100 maybe?
Probably half of the Cincinnati games are on regular TV.
Also if you have a friend or family member who has cable you can use their account login through the apps on Roku/Apple TV and watch games on ESPN.

I have switched to fiotics from TWC. Hands down fioptics is the winner for internet. Make sure however that they are running you fiber and not tapping into the copper (they probably are doing fiber if they are currently pulling it in your neighborhood)

BUT - if you are happy with your current services, you may not want to switch. After that first promo goes away you are going to likely be paying over $200 a month.

Where I live, with the options I have available, and with the disposable income I have available, it is worth it to me.

First the internet:
This was my main reason for switching. You don't pay for download - you pay for upload.

The fastest TWC can do is 5Mb up and that is the 50Mb down (fastest service they offer $$$)

With my fioptics I have a 30x30 connection. 30Mbs both directions - I have never seen a bandwidth issue with 3 client computers, 2 servers, 2 xbox ones, 5 tablets, 3 phones, 2 rokus, 3 smart tvs, 3 smart blueray players, and 4-6 people actively streaming, hosting, and gaming from 7:00am untill 10:00pm

Fiber is awesome!

Second the TV:
The digital tv over fiber is also great. Crystal clear and the set top boxes can be run over network cables instead of coax.

You also have the option of running it into existing coax and running it directly into tvs without the extra boxes.

TWC just changed their services recently to where you need a box for every tv.

I love it, we have one main tv that we watch hooked up to a set top box with dvr service. They also have on demand and lookback services that are great.

Most other rooms in the house have a tv just plugged into the coax (6 in total) and they all pick up different amounts of channels based on factors like age and programming range.

Everything from old tube tvs, old VCRs, and brand new small LED tvs have worked fine in this manner.

Last the Phone:
Its a digital VOIP phone solution. It works.

We mostly use our cell phones for everything. The only reason we haven't dropped the land line is so that the babysitter has a phone to dial 911 in emergencies.

If it weren't for the fact that she watches my children and my brother's children at our house everyday, the phone would be long gone.

TL DR - fiber is expensive, but for me it's worth it.
