I really don't want to build a cutting rig for a one time job:
http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=4&t=292695&page=1
The foam is expensive too so I don't want to "learn" how to do it or, have someone who says they know how to do it "learn" on mine.

Anyone here get it done locally?

Georgia case in Lawrenceville does it all the time and does it right.
Plus they use better foam than comes with the pelican case its closed cell.

Isn't the place in Tucker and I've heard that they are rediculously expensive the last time the subject was brought up here......

Yes tucker and I think there priced fair.
They did a 1700 pelican for me for $75 bux and included nice closed cell foam and cutting it to fit.
The pelican foam will retain moisture whereas the closed cell does not. For the price of the investment in the case $75 to have it safe is well worth it IMO.

$75 is very reasonable price to pay for good foam and them cutting it out- someone mentioned in a previous thread that they were quoted over $200 for a similar job.

might want to call and double check those prices, I know when I did mine they told me they couldn't buy the foam for $75.  several others had that same problem.

i will see if I can find my post.

here you go

from socket70:

Just got off the phone with Georgia Case. They told me $250 to do a Pelican 1750 for a bolt gun?!

You guys that said $85, was that a long time ago?

Did mine beginning of this year.
Plus I have a 1700 and did you talk to Robert Nycz ?
Pelican 1700 = 35.75" x 13.50" x 5.25"
Pelican 1750 = 50.50" x 13.50" x 5.25"
1750 is longer.
I would assume the $250 includes case whereas all I needed was the foam and them to cut it.
Maybe they have gone up in price since mine. Good thing I already had mine done.

I just called because I may get one done for a Wyoming hunt next year.

My needs are for two bolt rifles in the 1750 case (which is the longer size).

They told me ballpark is $350 including case.  $230 for case and $120 for the precision cutout.

Do they have any competitors?

I'm reconsidering going to McMaster-Carr and spending about $50 to make a heated wire...

i have about $10 in the cutter setup I used in the link I posted.  $18 for the foam, but i dont like the foam I should have spent more on that.

i used a door bell transformer and a dimmable light switch.

You can make a wire cutter all day long with a 6 amp 12volt battery charger. I have plenty of the wire, same wire I use in the heaters that we use to bend poly golf cart windshields. I can get pics tomorrow of one I made at work the other day if anyone is interested. Used it to cut seat foam for a few custom golf carts. It's a little more complicated than some people need, but I have spring tension on the wire because when the wire gets hot it tends to stretch a little, not enough to really hurt anything, but I wanted really straight cuts.

the wire was the only problem I had.  I used several things from picture hanging wire to fishing leaders and they all broke quicker then I would have liked. of course I never went out and bought any wire it was just stuff I had laying around.

BG do you have some info on that wire and how readily available is it? i have 3 more cases to figure out something to do with.

looooong ways from you.  I am in NW ATL.  but rumor has it I will be down your way in Feb.

ATL isn't too far, my mom lives in peachtree city. Don't think I'll be heading up that way except for christmas day for a while, but if you wanna try it out, you can have some, shouldn't cost much of anything to ship ya a few feet of it. IM me if ya want. Might work for ya, might not. I know with the 12 volt charger, 2 amps cuts foam ok, but at 6 amps you can cut a little faster, and never tried it any hotter than that. The wire is made to be used as a heater, so it holds up for long periods of time glowing red.

Oh and to the OP, a carving knife works pretty good for cutting foam also.

what is the name of that wire?  I might see if I can find it locally before trying to ship.

Not sure offhand, we were using stainless steel, but I think we changed. I'll find out tomorrow.

By chance did they also quote you the price to cut foam for 1 rifle?

My understanding is that it would be the same price... sounded like that was the charge for cutting it however I wanted, places for bipods, ammo, optics, whatever.
