Hopefully, the little Pony will be done by then.

I'd also like to put a few rounds through the AK and Nagant.

I usually get there around 9:30 and start setting and chewing the fat with the GARFCOMers.  Range doesn't open til 10:00.

Well, I did pick up Preban Colt this week, but I sold the upper already, so I can buy M4 upper instead. I don't think I can find new upper within a week, unless some one has Colt M4 upper for sale.

Unless your stuck on Colt ( which I too like ) you can go through Adoco(Steve)(spelling sorry)and get an RRA upper or even maybe contacy Ga percision ( Tommy Haskins ) and he builds and sell RRA's.He might have a RRA upper(M4 Type) on hand. He's in Forsyth. So you might have a upper in a couple of days.WarDawg

Found 2 colt M4 uppers.
One is new 16" M4A3 upper from KY imports for $700. Carry handle, no bolt.
Other is 95% 14.5" M4A3 upper from EE for $600.
Which one should I buy? they are both 1/7 twist barrel.

Just a piece of advice from someone who is wrapping up a complete Colt build.  Make sure you're getting your parts from a reputable source.  Is the upper on the EE factory assembled?  Does it come complete with B/C/CH and carry handle?  One other thing to consider, if it matters to you, is the fact that a 14.5" has to have the FS permanently attached otherwise it's considered an SBR.

All things being equal, I would get the 16" as I don't care for permanently attached muzzle devices and you get a little bit of a velocity gain.  If I was going to go the SBR route, I would do an 11.5"

Aight, no used upper from EE than, who knows which M16 lower it was used on?
Still the question remains 14.5" M4A3 (will perm. attatch vortex) upper from Hoplite for $750 or 16" M4A3 upper from Ky import for $700?
Link Posted: 12/28/2003 1:59:03 PM EDT
[#16]
My vote goes to the 16".  Here's why...

1. You're stuck with a 16" tube anyway.  Why not make it 16" of barrel?
2. Ability to change FS.
3. Ability to use a suppressor.
4. Ability to install FF tube without having to remove the permanently installed muzzle thingy.

OK!!! One last question!
Which 16" Colt upper should I get?
-HBAR 16" A3 with NO carry handle, (1/9 rate) for $580
-M4A3 with CH, (1/7) for $700?

They are pretty much same price, but is there advantage of M4 over HBAR? Obviously I won't be mounting M203. Mil-spec? Chrome lined?
Link Posted: 12/28/2003 2:33:59 PM EDT
[#18]
HBAR:

1. No chrome lining.
2. No M4 feedramp cuts.
3. 3/4 lb heavier than M4.
4. 1/9 twist good for everything from 55 gr to 69 gr.
5. Will resist heating up as quick, but will take longer to cool once hot.

M4:

1. Chrome lined.
2. M4 feedramp cuts allowing you to shoot a wider variety of ammo (i.e. soft point).
3. 3/4 lb. lighter than HBAR.
4. 1/7 twist good for everything from 55 gr to 100 gr.
5. Will heat up quicker, but will cool quicker as well.

The above statements are true assuming the HBAR is not the M4 model.  I have the M4 HBAR and it has chrome-lining and the M4 feedramp cuts.  The only difference between it and the standard M4 is weight.  I don't see M4 in the description, though, so I'm going to assume it's a standard HBAR.

The bottom line is 3/4 lb. versus heat resistance.  Whichever is most important to you.

I did mean standard 16" HBAR.
You've convinced me to go with 16" M4A3 Colt upper ($700[>(]). Still I am curious if 14.5" has better spec. or quality compared to 16" version (other than lenghth & velocity issue).

Sorry for hi-jacking CE thread, but you guys been really helpful.
Thanks!

You'll get Colt quality either way.  14.5" offers no advantage other than it's 1.5" shorter if both barrels have a FS.  The disadvantages outweigh the one advantage, though.  It was chosen by the military for strictly logistical reasons.  It certainly isn't any more mechanically or ballistically sound.  You won't go wrong with a 16".

My upper will be here Tuesday.  I've already emailed Allen about coming over for a barreling party.  You're more than welcome to join us.  My project has taken a little twist, though...imagine that.  I've decided to send my Colt lower off to Ken at SAW to have the hole drilled for the front pushpin detent and to have the lower rehardcoated in black (the gray is driving me crazy).  The problem is I wasn't anxious to be without a working gun for god knows how long.  I paid our little friend at The Gun Shop a visit and picked up a RRA lower and parts kit.  I figure I can use that until my Colt gets back and then I can slap a .458 SOCOM upper on it.  Would this be considered using any excuse to build a lower?  I whipped the lower together Friday night so all that's left is to barrel the upper.  I made a few interesting observations comparing the RRA parts to the parts in my Colt lower.

1. Both the RRA and Colt triggers are identical to include the "M" marking. The Colt has a portion of the tail of the trigger machined away, though.
2. Both the RRA and Colt disconnectors are identical to include the "CS" marking.  It's interesting to note that my last parts kit did not come with a Colt disconnector.
3. Both the RRA and Colt hammers are different.
4. Both the RRA and Colt hammer/trigger springs are different.

Perhaps RRA and Colt get their internals from the same source, but Colt makes their own hammers and springs for some reason.  I'm getting the impression that Colt likes to keep a tight rein on critical parts to ensure quality control.  I think they still manufacture most critical parts in house and they are willing to get non-critical parts from outside sources.

I would like to make it to CE, but I already have a reservation at WS with DeltaAir on the 4th.  Sorry, I can't make it.

Buzz.

BTW, Drop Delta a get well.  He buggered up his back a few days ago at work.

So hopefully he will have the "back"bone to make the shoot he has been planning for the last month or so.

Bookhound,

I have a complete Colt M4 upper I was going to offer to DU, thought he might prefer to touch and feel that sort of item before purchase. Plus, he could let all the GA ARF'ers pass judgement on it before he bought it. If he was interested, I would have it at CE.

I have never fired it.  I like the 20" barrels better myself.

I'm in for CB and CE.
It will be nice to burn powder again- I think it's been about 5 months (not counting duck hunting in NM). Sad.
For those of you who've assembled lowers- I need someone to look at mine and try to diagnose the pin-walkout problem I've been having. Or I'll just JB weld the trigger pin in place and forget about it.

Kidding.
Look forward to seeing everybody there-

Book-
I do so many of them that the people who work up front tell me that I ought to go for a second Doctorate (Doctor of Anal Glands).
This is an actual conversation from my job on Monday, after I did three eye surgeries (unusual for my practice):
Paul: I saw on the schedule that there were three eyes to do today. I thought that they only let you do anal glands.
Me: Well, I can only work on one end of the dog or the other... nothing in between.

This is the worst quote hack setup in the history of AR15.com.
Thanks for the offer to help me out.
Have anal sacs, will travel.

I'd like to take the M1-A out for some fine tuning and meet you guys finally.

I thought it was a different strategy.  It would make the "sniper" laught and show its position.  Then he can shoot back while the guy is laughing...

Actually, I think that position is better known as the battle induced attention-getting tactic stance, AKA BAIT .  I guess the 10/22 would be kinda extraneous, seeing as one of those floppy Easter sunday hats would probably suffice

Edited to say: sorry, Bookhound, but that picture just cracks me up.  I guess we all have our moments, huh?
