[Last Edit: 3/10/2006 7:35:53 PM EDT by SKSGuy]
I'm working on a lab for my chemistry class and am trying to figure out the functional group of a paticular structure

We're dealing only with organic molecules here so in this case, C, H, O

By looking at it for the past 10min I'm thinking C4H8O2 (ACETATE)...soo Ester group.

Help would be appreciated.

If you can't tell by looking at the inside cover of your text book...then take this to GD--you'll get an answer pretty soon. What is the dark stick--a double bond??

It's a double bond, correct

Isn't two O's a C-O-O-H group...i.e. carboxylic acid.

Don't try to name the compound, just derive what class it is in.

All the damn molecules look the same size to me.

I submitted the lab. Lets hope for the best.

KETONE....2-pentone MY FINAL ANSWER

The double bond is C=O

All the others are just Cand H...the ones in the foreground just look huge due to perspective...what a ripoff!!!.......damn you for sucking me into this!!

..then again, I could be wrong

Carbine-O out

(or is it Carbene=O ?)

I have not seen Him on the site for awhile But I think Fredricksburg is a chemist or something like that.

The doc (my professor) is quick to grade so I should have an answer within 24-48hrs. So your mind can rest at ease

CarbineMonoxide,
I just wanted to let you know I got the grade back from the professor.

Turns out it was C4H8O2 - Ester Group.

Thanks again for your help though. I do appreciate it.
