I know that some types of rifles & shotguns are not technically banned in D.C. the way that handguns are.  So - does anyone own an AR in Washington? Was it tough to get it registered?  What other laws apply to ARs or other rifles in D.C.? What are the ammunition and magazine restrictions like over the line in D.C.?

I live in Arlington (Clarendon)  and was on the verge of moving in w/ the girlfriend (now ex) and the question came up: my place in VA or hers in D.C.; I never the matter serious thought as to my guns, but I have to wonder - "what if things had been different?"

Semi-auto rifles are specifically banned as "machine guns" under DC law if they are "capable of firing more than 12 times without reloading"(actual capacity of the magazine you have/own is irrelevant)hock.gif

As for moving from VA into DC over a girl: DON'T DO IT!!!!hat

If you want to own ANY firearms, do NOT move into DC.  Although there are very prohibitive restrictions on gun ownership, and it is technically possible, good luck trying to register your guns with MPD.
They just won't do it.  When I worked for MPD I had had a hell of a time registering my department authorized off-duty Glock 26.  Took me three trips downtown and a buttload of paperwork, and I was a DC Police Officer at the time.
AR's or anything other than a single shot shotgun are VERBOTEN.
Stay in Arlington, brother.  It's scary liberal, there, but it's still Virginia.

Thanks for the insights Romulus and RifleCop; you will be please to know that while the ex-girlfriend is history, my VA residency is 100% intact and I am not going anywhere in the near future. I own my VA condo & if I move in the future, it will not be to DC.

As for MPD putting up any road-blocks they can to registering a lawfully owned firearm, that is no surprise to me at all.  My LOE friends who either work for MPD or worked there in the past tell me horror stories about how the leadership runs that place. I think of it as "the department that crack-smoking Mayor Barry built."  Isn't he still running that city as part of the D.C. city council?

Ward Eight councilman, bro.  Some of the best officers I ever worked with and for were at MPD.  Having said that, some of the laziest, shittiest officers I've ever worked with were also at MPD.
The problem is the senior leadership.  They fail to properly train, then are bewildered when officers make poor decisions.  They retain shitbags that put the car in service and go to sleep and punish aggresive cops that make felony/gun/drug arrests every night.

Not directly related to your original question, but as a tangent let me relate my recent observation of numerous DC licensed vehicles at a metro area gun range.  Not too big a deal if you consider that the range rents firearms, but when people are bringing in their own guns it makes it abundantly clear that the so-called ban has been pretty ineffective.

Obviously, D.C. NEEDS gun control!!!!!!!!!!!!! Look at what happened to poor crack-smokin mayor Barry last night:

Former District of Columbia Mayor Marion Barry was robbed at gunpoint at his apartment by some youths who had helped him carry his groceries.Barry, who wasn’’t injured in the Sunday night robbery, said he gave the youths a couple of dollars for helping unload groceries from his car and they left. They returned, however, and after Barry let them into his Southeast apartment, they pointed a gun at his head and took his wallet, which contained cash and credit cards, Barry told WRC-TV.““Obviously, I’’m traumatized. To have a pistol cocked in your face is not something you cannot feel emotional about,”” Barry said. Barry, 69, is a member of the City Council and served four terms as mayor. In his third term, he was videotaped in 1990 in a hotel room smoking crack cocaine in an FBI sting. The following year, he served a six-month prison sentence. He is awaiting sentencing later this month in federal court on his guilty plea to two misdemeanor counts stemming from his failure to file income tax returns in 2000.

Poor mayor Barry! If only they had gun control, except, when he was first on the city council, HE PRESIDED OVER THE BANNING OF HANDGUN & LATER, AS MAYOR, HE SUPPORTED THE CONTINUING BAN!

I guess people get what they ask for. Thanks Mayor Barry - for making D.C., and particularly your home in Ward 8 - what it is today.
