Transfer through a FFL.

If you are only an NJ resident, then you have to go through an FFL unless you are receiving from a direct blood relative (parent, sibling, or grandparent).  However, you are allowed to inherit a pistol from say a deceased direct family person without paperwork as well.  However, if a friend wants to 'give' you a pistol, or even if you inherit it from a family friend, you still must go through an FFL... law says pretty much if anyone other than family disposes to you, gives, sells, or otherwise transfers ownership, it has to be FFL-ed.
