I'm going to take my AR this year.

Is there a limit on the capacity of a mag?  I know the max round count is 4 rds in the gun, but can this be loaded into a 30rd pmag or do you need a smaller magazine(5 rd'er)

And if there is a magazine capacity limit, can you simply design a plug to go into the magazine?  I went on the DNR site and read the rulebook for deer but can't seem to find a clause about this.

MIke.

I am not sure where you read or heard about the limit is "4 rds in the gun" or mag.  I am unaware of a round count limit for deer hunting.  Generally your "non black"  typical hunting rifles hold 3 or 4 in the mag by design.  Unless you look at the lever guns, then it varies, the Marlin 336 holds 6 in the mag tube.  So the thought of 4 does not jive with my experience.

A rifle must have a 16" barrel and be .22 center-fire or larger, beyond that, there are few restrictions.

Suppressors are legal as well.

If you have a 10 or 20 round mag use it, just to lighten the load and reduce the footprint of the rifle a bit.

I have been hunting with an AR15 for the last four years.
Usually I only take a 20 round magazine, filled up with one box of ammunition.
A 30 round mag is just too much mag and ends up getting in the way.
My wife has a flush fit 10 rounder she uses.

I know this is a dead horse subject, but what kind of ammo are you using in your AR? Is it .223 or other?

You may use any size magazine loaded to its capacity if you wish.  The only restriction is that the caliber must be .22 center fire or larger and no ball (fmj or non-expanding) ammo.  No fully automatic firearms but NFA registered suppressors and short barrels are fine.

SBR's are also legal as long as you own them legally.

Last year was the first year that hunted with the AR 6.8SPC.  One shot at about ~150 yards, SSA 85gr TSX, deer went about 20 yards before it dropped.

I carry a pair of 10 round magazines in the woods with me...

I alternated between two guns, a 6.8 with 110gr Vmax's or a 5.56 with 75gr TAP.
My wifes 5.56 was loaded with 75gr Hornady TAP.
Two years ago when we got to shoot deer her buck went 5' and dropped dead, mine tipped over in its tracks.

This year I am going with the 6.8 loaded with SSA 110gr TSX.
And my wife will have her 5.56 loaded with SSA 70gr TSX or my spare 6.8, she doesn't know yet.
Since we cant shoot past 75 yards I think it will work out fine.

When I used my FAL for deer season all I had was the full sized 20 rnd. mags and I didn't want to cut one down.

I would only put 10 in the one I had in the rife because the rifle alone got so heavy during the day.
I did have a full 20 in a pouch on my belt.

+1

My Dad uses a FAL and he does the same thing.  I hunt with a HK91 and load 10 to 15 rounds, 20 round is too much weight for the woods.

When using the AR I use 20 round mag, the Steyr AUG uses a 30 round mag because that is all I have, the 6.8 AR is 25 round mag because that is all I have and same goes for the Springfield M1A Socom II

This year I have a new Kel Tec RFB that will use 20 round FAL mags, but I would like to find a 10 round mag because the 20 sticks to my hunting coat.
