APACHE JUNCTION, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities say three Utah men are missing after they set out to find the legendary Lost Dutchman Gold Mine in central Arizona, which has been entrenched in triple-digit heat for weeks.

The Maricopa County sheriff's office began a ground and aerial search Sunday after family members called to say they had not heard from the men since they left Utah five days earlier.

Family members say the men planned on hiking into the rugged Superstition Mountains and exploring the area.

Two of the men reportedly have medical conditions, and it was not known if they have enough medication or camping provisions.

Sheriff's officials say a vehicle belonging to the men was found at the Lost Dutchman State Park, but it hadn't been used for days.

They say one of the men was rescued last year when he became lost on another hike to find the Lost Dutchman's gold, which treasure hunters have been seeking since at least 1892.

I'm really not feeling it.  How many people have had to be rescued over the treasure?  I know it seems like I hear it at least a couple times a year.

This has already been added to the wiki article on the lost dutchman's mine.

Play stupid games, get dead.

As a backpacker and outdoorsman, I have a hard time feeling bad for people who go into the wild woefully unprepared.

Then again, maybe the Apache sniper got them . . . .

Or maybe they found the stash and are enjoying a penthouse suite in Vegas with their new girlfriends.

October would have been a WAY better time to go!  Sounds like someone didn't learn their lesson the first time around, and sucked more people into the deadly fun.

Damn, ANY time but these three months would have been a good time to go. 115 degree heat is not fun packing crap around. Darwin win imo.

Been there done that . Back in 1972 I spent 5 days in the Superstions looking for it . All I got was sunburn and tired . It's real easy to get lost back in there .I went late November and it was hot in the day and cold at night . If it wasn't for the mules we had we might have never made it out . I can think of worse places to spend eternity .

You can't buy just part of a Mexican woman, you have to buy the whole thing.  However, you can rent just one part.

Fail.

Why on earth would anyone make this trip during July??? That's just an epic level of stupidity. I spend a lot of my free time in the desert in extremely remote areas. It doesn't take much to exhaust yourself in this heat. Day or even at night, you're out of energy rather quick. Knowing your physical limits is very important.

Chances are, these mensa members couldn't physically carry enough water on them to successfully make this trek. Relying on natural sources can be extremely risky. Much of this state lacks decent firewood, so purifying water isn't so easy to do. You're left purifying water through filters and chemical additives. Or you end up squirting like a goose and lose all of your water.

The trip that they had planned sounds like a lot of fun really. Better planning would have made it a lot more fun. Dying of heat exhaustion isn't the nicest way to die. We've taken obvious trips to either absolute legends or historic events in an attempt to locate supporting information one way or another. Most times, nothing is found.

These guys should have stuck to the level 1 Geocache treasures.

Not really. I was a ground-pounding Sheriff's Department SAR Medic for 13 years when I lived in The Occupied Zone (Kalifornistan). This shit happens all to often, and in some cases the sheer stupidity exhibited is far worse than even in this case. If these guys are in fact not hiding out somewhere whooping it up on their winnings (another common occurrence), they're toast by now....and soon to be human jerky in that sun & heat.

Nature has a way of dealing with stupid people.....and She's unforgiving in doing so.
