I'll be there.  I was going to go up and practice a little today, but I think that I'll go up later on in the week and practice. Should be real fun.

I think it's just going to be you me and double b.  I wished I would have went up this morning.  We could have practiced together.  Since I now remember you mentioning that you usually shoot on Wednesday mornings.

I may actually go up and camp Saturday and Sunday night. It would be nice after the match going back to camp and cracking a few cold ones. See ya Sunday!

Except you can't crack cold ones at the Ames Ikes.  Dry facility.  And they are serious about it.  Been the rule for probably 20 years.  Had to do with someone falling down the stairs at the club house.  It occasionally comes up for discussion at board meetings but not often. Insurance would go through the roof if they changed it.

And the three gun match is a hoot.  Won't make it this year, but have in the past.  Shooting balloons with bird shot is just way to much fun to be legal..........

IM sent concerning this VERY STUPID policy IMO.  Anybody ever consider liability statements or waivers??  Would that not solve the problem?  I care about beer almost as much as guns.  Van Meter is becoming more appealing.

Real life is starting to interfere with my hobbies.  I won't make this one.  Next week at Knoxville isn't looking too good either.

Hey guys- been a while since I've been on here (since I got married before the spring shoot as a matter of fact!) but I have a couple of questions:  Do you have to be a member of Ikes to "watch" the IDPA events there, and do you have to be a member of Ikes to "participate" in the IDPA events there?
Link Posted: 8/21/2006 4:19:35 AM EDT
[#12]
No you do not need to be a member.  Come on out.  It's a great time.  Next match is the second Sunday in September.  Signup at 8:30 match at 9.  Hope to see you there.

hell as far as that goes you can try out a match at boone as well.  there is one on the 26th.  if you need any gear let me know.  i can help to equip a new shooter, so long as you supply your own ammo.  i have 2 extra IDPA rigs ready to go, just need to be told to bring them along.

I have been watching the postings here and have checked out the websites for IDPA.  It does sound like something I would enjoy...

Where can I find more info on this shoot at Boone on the 26th???  that is closest to me. (but Ames isn't much further)

ALso- since I am entirely a newbie to this... what "gear" would I need??  I know that sounds like a stupid question, but I haven't read EVRYTHING on the web pages...

I have a 1911 clone .45 ACP, an H&K USP .40 a S&W 686 .357 and a S&W 15 .38...???

Mags?  ROunds? Additional equipment? Glasses and plugs (sfety equipment) are a given...

I appreciate any info !!

ok what a person needs.......

eyes and ears(protection for each)

gun.......38spl or larger

if a revo you can carry 4 reloads, speed loaders or moon clips.
side note on this, if you have a 686+, the 7 shot version, you still only get to shoot 6 between reloads
autos can carry 2 spare mags, and 1 in the gun( so you will need 3 mags)

some way to carry your reloads(mag carriers,  speedloader holders, pocket)

you will need a holster(somthing that could be used for daily carry while concealed).....no shoulder rigs, no small of the back, no crossdraw(saftey reasons).......another option, if you are law enforcement is the use of duty belt and gear, but it must be complete

you will need ammo to fit whatever gun you want to shoot.......i always bring extra rounds, but normally boone is about 55-70 rounds per scoresheet, and ames is a bit more.  it would do you wise to bring about 200 rounds.  you are allowed to either shoot 2 guns, or the same gun twice.  i do recommend this.  it only costs $5 to shoot, so whats antoher $5 to try and make up for all the mistakes that you will make up for on your first trip through.

you will need some way to "cover" your gun.  this would be a vest, a shirt, a jacket........anything that you could wear to nto show your gun in public(if licensed to carry).

the most important thing to remember is your sense of humor and your willingness to have fun.  you will be surrounded by like minded individuals that are more than willing to help you out.  we all kid each other back and forth and all enjoy each others company.  it is a brotherhood cery much like the one that we here at the Iowa HTF have.......the only difference that i can see is that the idpa group gets to shoot with each other much more frequently.

if you seek further information feel free to email ro PM me and i will give you my phone number and you can call me.  you can also joint the Yahoo group and get up to date and read all of the joking around that we do, and let me tell you that group is full of it right now.........sign up and see, then maybe later you can get informed of the whole story.

here is the link for the group Iowa IDPA

you will have to wait for confirmation to become a part of the group, but it is worth the wait.

hope this novel of info helps you out.
Brett

by the way wantone, any of the guns you listed will work.  dont worry about what class you will be in.  just bring the 1 you shoot the best along.

for the shoot on saturday you need to be at the sportsmans club by 830 for regestration and walk through.  i will be there around 730 to help set up.  if you decide you are going to make it, let me know.  if you show up early i will kind of walk you through all of the range rules and commands.  think of it as  brief range safety/etiquitte guidelines.

hope to see you there

Great get started!!! it is a load of fun

1)  one holster on a good belt I use outside waist band style(black hawk serpa is my choice)many good sets in fact blade tech has a starter kit for 1911 with mag pouch included

2)  mag pouch

3)  some sort of cover garment
anything from tach vest (5.11 woolrich to upland bird hunting vests)

4)   Ames Ike's will run 50 to 70 rounds

5) I have 5-6 mags for my xd  2 would be the minimum
three would make you life a bit easier

You need a holster. Kydex, or whatever.  IWB or out.  They are pretty lenient.  You need a dual mag carrier or two single mag carriers.  You can shoot the 1911 clone in CDP (custom defense pistol) the HK in SSP (stock service pistol)  and the revos in SSR (stock service revolver) I believe.  Moon clips are pretty much a neccessity if you want to be able to compete and have a chance.  killarbb can explain better the finer aspects of the revolver classes, as he has focused on those this season and is better versed in those areas.  Usually 100 rounds is more than enough per gun you plan on shooting.  You can shoot more than one gun/class per match.  As an example I usally shoot CDP and ESP (enhanced service pistol).  You'll find that it is so fun that one time through is not enough.

Here is where you can find all info about are matches and there is some info regarding where the Boone match is central iowa IDPA
Essentialy you go to Boone and take Hwy 30 west until you reach Montana Ave or Rd.  (just look for a road named montana), take a left heading south and it is on the left side of the road about 2 miles or so.  You cannot miss it.

Hope to see you out there!

ETA:  I can't believe I forgot about cover!  BEER!!!

both of the revolvers you listed would be SSR, and that class doesnt allow moonclips......so you wouldnt have to "shoot" against me.  but i dont feel that we really shoot against anyone, although it seems like i shoot against everyone.........not many people show up shooting the round gun.........I love them

talk about everyone chiming in all at once.

this could grow into a big topic, especially if we mention something about tailgating Septic tank to an IDPA match........but from the sound sof it, hell has a better chance of freezing over next week than septic gracing us with his presence.

First of all, I appologize for hi-jacking the thread

But, I do thank you all for the great info!  I am VERY interested in getting in on this...  BUT, unfortunately, I usually (read most always) have to work Saturday mornings...  Are they always in the mornings?

Maybe we can start a new IDPA thread so 40-45 can get this back on track for 3-gun (which, by the way also looks like a lot of fun!!)

THANKS ALL!!!
