SPALDING COUNTY, Ga. –– A Spalding County sheriff's deputy is in critical condition after being shot in the face Friday, Channel 2 confirmed.

The person accused of shooting the deputy was killed, police said. A third person, said to be a passing motorist, was grazed by a bullet.

+1.  Prayers sent.

Why would a person who wanted to commit suicide do it by shooting other people too?

ETA: Oh, good lord, they took him to Grady?  I guess they're gunshot to the face specialists, since they get so many of them.

Believe it or not, financial status aside, Grady is where you wanna be. They are the GSW specialist. You are in the best possible hands in the SE there. Treat, stabilize, and then transfer to a diff hospital for recovery.

Grady has an excellent trauma center and I believe it's the only level 1 trauma center in GA.

Footrat would know for sure.

Prayers for Deputy Buice.

I Don't know about a woman. I just got off the phone with my MIL who told me that  my nephew took glass and shrapnel to the face as he was driving by. An ENT has briefed them on what they are going to do. He was hit pretty hard in the area around his nose.

We are waiting on a call from the Sheriffs office about his truck which is still at the right now. The dispatcher is supposed to have a deputy call me so I can find out what /where I need to do about it.

The deputy is in surgery right now and I can tell you from experience that when it comes to a GSW to the head those are gifted surgeons and the exact place he needs to be in this situation. I send prayers out to his family.

Man I hate to hear that. Hope the Deputy make it through all right, and your nephew too.

As far as Trauma centers in Georgia, you have Grady, Medical Center of Central Georgia, Memorial in Savanah, and Medical College of Georgia are the level one trauma centers.  Several Level two centers kinda speckled around the top end of the 285, and Atlanta Medical in Atlanta is a level two. one up north and one down south.  There are some level three and fours around as well.  I think a total of 19 trauma centers in Georgia.

11Alive is now saying that initial reports that a woman was injured are in error, that it's a male victim, presumably your nephew.  Gunman was using "an assault rifle" to shoot at passing cars and shot through a car door to hit the police officer.

Ditto, I know an associate professor of surgery at Emory/Grady.... same doc patched up one of the Fulton Co. Courthouse shooting victims.  Ghetto reputation aside, Grady is THE place to go if you get shot/trauma.

My FiIL was in the ER with my Nephew with Deputy Buice in the bed next to them. Deputy Buice is said to be going to be Fine. Dr. told my FIL the bullet did not enter the scull but traveled between the skin and skull and lodged in his shoulder/chest area and no critical parts were hit.

My nephew was driving by and saw the Sheriffs Deputy's near the house at the moment the shooting started. A bullet came through the passenger side window grazed his forehead and exited the driver side window. He was sprayed with so much glass to his face and eyes he jammed the brakes because he couldn't see. There was so much blood another driver who stopped waived a deputy down and told him it looked like the boy had been shot in the head. It looks bad. They picked a lot of glass out of his eyes and are scheduled to remove more Monday when some swelling goes down
There was another vehicle driven by a woman that was hit, she drove on a ways before stopping.

An interesting evening was had by the 2tom2 family.

Sorry about your nephew. Hope he gets better and still has his eye sight.

Few millimeters and it sounds like the outcome would be much different!

He is going to be fine. Dr told him there was going to some small pieces that will be left in and he should not notice any of it.

He told me that he was looking through the pass side when it just starting "cracking in slow motion". His face looks like it was peppered with a couple loads of birdshot with a stripe about 3/8" wide x 1.5" long across part of his forehead.
To imagine what would have been if he 1/10 mph faster brings back some horrible memories.

I have not heard any more about Deputy Buice.....so i take that as good news.

Thanks for the info MedicOC.

IIRC, the revenue from the new "super speeder" laws is supposed to add funds to maintain and improve GA's trauma care network.
