Say you were using the same style gun, suppressor, and subsonic ammo... would .45, 9mm, or .380 be quieter?

id say .380, the smaller diameter would be quieter (so .45 is out) and 9mm is high pressure, so Id say .380 would be the easiest to silence.  However, the blowback vs short recoil might cause a difference, and I have no clue which one, if either is quieter.

disclaimer, I heard .45 isnt very quiet due to the large bore, but I could be wrong.

.45 is damn quiet.

All else being equal - the smaller, weaker round will be the quietest just based on physics. It takes less energy to get it moving.

Might other factors such as achieved velocities, action weight, scaled (up/down) suppressor, etc. change things? I think so, but it seems like it would still be in favor of the smaller weaker round.

Everything not being equal - and all bets are off. You could design a trash can sized suppressor for instance and make most anything quiet.

That's what I was thinking, I've heard that 45 is very quiet, but that was only due to its low velocity, so with similar velocity ammunition I would think the small bored, lesser powered of the group would be quietest, fallowed by 9mm and lastly 45...

So why is it you hear about 45 being suppressed so much and James Bond is the only one to favor the 380?

.45 is not a quiet as 9mm subsonic. The hole is smaller. .380 = 9mm if both are subsonic. .45 has the reputation as quiet because standard pressure 230 grain .45 ball is subsonic.

because he's James Bond.  It doesn't matter what he uses, it always kills the bad guy DRT...

James Bond used a 7.65mm Browning (.32) PPK.

What gun? My M11A1 .380 Mac is still a bit loud as it is open bolt, which makes a difference.

James Bond uses blanks and huge prop explosions

James Bond was an example....

i was just wondering... i think ill get a 9mm or 22lr suppressor when the funds come in...

The .380 would be the quietest since it has the least amount of propellant, and therefore less expanding gas for the suppressor to deal with.

The advantage of the .45 is that factory ammo is already subsonic.  Even though you can get 9mm subsonic it is most likely not readily available unless you order online or reload.  I'm not sure about the velocity of the .380
