Hammerless would be best. Skip the uber light weight models. Get some flat bottom two finger wood grips.

A model 640,shown here, with grips like the ones shown on this 36 LS fits nicely in my front pocket.

+1 on the SW 640.  Carry mine in and Uncle Mikes pocket holster

The 640 is a bit bigger and heavier than the airweight 642 and 442.

Go with the S&W 642/442 or 340/340PD.  They're the best game in town for J frame pocket carry.

They conceal in the pocket, don't pull your pants down and are an acceptable CCW caliber.

I've got an older model 38 "Bodyguard" Airweight.  The Bodyguard has a shrouded hammer with part of it still exposed.  It gives you the option of shooting double or single action while still having the hammer covered for a clean pocket draw.

I carry a 642 in a DeSantis Nemisis holster, with Bianchi Speed Strips for backup..

I had a Model 38 Bodyguard, I have to say I like the 642 better.

If you pocket carry, I highly recommend some kind of holster.  Like I said before, I have the Nemisis but there are many other options out there, depending on how much you want to spend.

I'm a fan of my recently acquired M37... if you don't mind forking up the extra money, find one with the firing pin on the hammer and no lock

SW 442 is nice, it's the black one.  I carry it in an Uncle Mike's #4 pocket holster, or a DeSantis Nemesis.  I have the 642 also which is stainless, also nice.  I had a problem with the 642 which is about 7 years old.  SW paid to have it returned, gave me a new frame free of charge, and sent it back within 14 days!  Now that's service.  I do like the wooden grips of the Lady Smith.

The 642/442 is the all around best bet for pocket carry IMO. Considerably cheaper than the 340PD and much more forgiving in hand pain when training with it.

+1 on the model 38 Bodyguard.  I have owned them all except for the scandium designs and my old 1959 Model 38 flatlatch is the one I have kept.  I carry it in a Uncle Mikes size 3 pocket holster or the DeSantis Nemisis for baggier trousers.  I have the factory wood "diamond" grips on it with a Tyler T-Grip adapter.  A-1 pocket rocket medicine!  he

Edit in a couple of photos!

+1 on the 38/638. I've had a 638 for several years and carry it alot. I use either an Uncle Mikes or a no-name nylon inside the pants holster.
