When it comes to picking out a defense load, which sways your decision more, velocity vs. weight?  I think the more weight the more it will penetrate, but there are others who advocate velocity as more stopping power. Lets' say in .45 ammo.  Who likes the 230grain vs. 200 or 185grain?

Why use anything other than the 230 gr.  If you use the 185 gr you just turned it into a .40 S&W that may not penetrate as well as the .40.

A heavier bullet traveling at slow velocities will dump all of it's energy into the threat. That is what you want to shock the system into shutting down or at least take the fight out of the BG. Plus with a .45 cal round you will do more damage as far as diameter is concerned. But that is another thread isn't it? Shot placement is your number one priority though. Hope this helps. Take care.
