What is the major difference between the two series in the Kimber line??  Something to do with the firing pin safety??  If the series II has a firing pin safety, why does everyone hate it so much?

IIRC, series I has internal extractor, no excess safeties.

Series II has the external extractor (spotty reliability, though I can't see why....it SHOULD be an improvement, ) and the FPS, which is a useless addition that adds nothing to the pistol, except from an anti-liability point of view.

There is a middle ground as well.  There are early Series II that had the internal extractor and the FPS.

I don't like either one simply because they are more moving parts in a machine, and I like to minimize the moving parts.
