85xxx on a police positve in 38 S&W

I can't narrow it down online....I'm seeing 1911 to 1916. Sources don't seem to distinguish the 38 S&W from 32 and 38 special... I'm thinking it is 1911 or 1913 with 1916 being an outside date.

Serial number range for the Police Positive in .38 S&W from 1916 to 1917 is 82000 to 89000.

Have you got a link? The one source I checked showed that sn range but listed it as 38 spcl. The same source showed that an range as as 1911 but in .32...

I educated guess that the 38 SW were built on the 32 frames in the 1911 dates...

No link. That is from a little book I’ve had for more than thirty years called “Colt’s Dates of Manufacture” by R.L. Wilson.  If your revolver was a .32 that serial number would put it manufactured in 1911.  If it was a .38 Special that number would put it being manufactured in 1913. It being a .38 S&W that number puts it being manufactured in 1916.
