A friend of mine just got a new XD 45 and all of a sudden he is having stovepipe issues (ejecting). He is using my reloads which is 3.8 grains of clays with a 200 grain ranier bullet. I have shot this load for several years in several different 1911's without a single problem. Is is possible that this load isn't quite powerful enough to cycle the XD with such a heavy recoil spring ? If so, can you get a lighter recoil spring for it like you can a 1911 ?  Any ideas ?  thanks.

There's your problem, right there, sir. The gun doesn't like that particular load, IMO.

I can always up the load a bit if this is the problem, but I have thousands of rounds of this loaded up already that I use in 3-gun matches, and I was letting him help shoot it up. Thats why my next thought was the lighter recoil spring. ???

I wouldn't do this. It's too easy to forget that you have the lighter recoil spring in & then shoot a bunch of normal loads in it, beating the frame in the process.

I see that Midway offers several different spring weights but you have to change out the guide rod to make them work. It then looks like they are regular 1911 springs but right now they say they don't have any available for the 45. I hear through the grapevine tht Wollf is working an a set for 45. Looks like we'll have to wait.

From my own experience I can guarantee this is too light a load for the XD. I would not change the recoil spring. What works in one gun may not necessarily work in another gun. I have a light .357 mag load that runs great in my SP101. In my Blackhawk the same load show obvious signs of high pressure. YMMV.

The .45ACP Tactical uses a guide rod that is around 0.392" diameter, so a standard 1911 spring will not fit over it.  The rod sold at www.pistolgear.com is a solid stainless rod that is just adding weight by replacing the stock hollow rod.

I have some prototypes out there that let you use 1911 springs in the Tactical and they have worked well so far.  I bought too many pistols earlier this year and ran out of money to make the rods for production, but they will not be too far off.

The .45ACP Service model needs a custom rod also, but can be made to work with some 1911 springs.

I am going to assume the above post is Don (Don's guide rods)  If it is, listen to this guy, he has made some of the best guide rods available.  And I believe he is working on a rod that will be the same diameter of the 1911 so we can use 1911 springs.
