I have the itch for an XD .45. I remeber seeing some pics of broken guide rods in the .40 versions. Seems the guide rods were 2 pieces and the weld had a habit of breaking.

Does the .45 come with a 2 piece guide rod???

The 4" Service model does. The 5" Tactical has a one piece rod.

That guide rod issue seems to have been a fairly isolated problem. SA has continued development (somewhat quietly) on the XD since its introduction and have addressed some other issues in the latest generation of XDs. I would not be surprised if the recoil guide has been addressed as well, but I'm not certain of that. I do know that the finish and the locking block have had changes since its introduction, as well as the frame itself.

In any case, aftermarket one-piece non-captive guide rods and the appropriate recoil springs are available for the 4" Service model.

ETA2: Oops, I guess that rod isn't available for the .45ACP version yet. Stay tuned, I guess..

I think the guide rods are teh same size, you'd just have to pick an appropriate spring to go with it. The inventor of the rod has a FAQ page: www.hs2000talk.com/viewtopic.php?t=10159

The XD-45 uses a different guide rod than the other calibers. It is larger diameter. The XD guide rod problems seem to be mainly with the XD-40 Service.
